Hi all
I'm wanting some advice on where to stay in Munich for three nights in December. I'm traveling with wife and kids (15 months and 3 years) so want a place to stay that we can also do laundry at, let the kids run around a bit, without being expensive. We aren't adverse to German Hostels, because they knock the pants off most motels in Australia for value, quality and comfort, and we're going to live it up for a whole week later on in the ski resort of Obertauern in Austria.

I found a nice family-run hotel in Dachau for EUR100 a night, but my wife is concerned that Dachau is too far out when our 15 month old explodes, and we need to retreat to the fort, especially when it is a tad bit colder than here in Crocodile City (goosebumps form here at 19 degrees). My thinking was Dachau would be nice, as it would be more like a village compared with CBD, hence less stress. My wife is more inclined to go with the YMCA close to the Hauptbahnhof.

Are there any travelers who can provide advise as parents?

Dachau is a fair way out, a bit of a satellite city really. Really digging into my memory banks but maybe 30 to 45 minutes out on the S-bahn. Having said that, I'm not sure what you mean by your 15 month old exploding? If it just means you need to get inside and settle them there are a number of places where you can do that in and around munich city - a beer hall if nothing else.

I normally stay with my brother when in Munich so I don't have any recommendations. But I just did a random search on Wotif and found this place. It has a fairly decent location, convenient to public transport and such and seems a bit cheap. No idea about the quality of the place. Leonardo Hotel & Residenz München - Wotif.com

Here is another that is priced pretty good and seems good for transport K+K Hotel am Harras, Munich - Wotif.com Again I have no idea if the hotel is any good.

Really, between the trams and u bahn getting around munich is pretty easy.

+1 to what Medhead says. Dachau is a fair way out from Munich on a suburban train line.
I stayed at the Sofitel at the Hauptbahnhof it's easy to get around from that location

Of course, Dachau would have a village type of atmosphere so if that is important.....

Personally, having visited the camp, I'm not sure I could stay in the town, 7 years later and the name of the place still leaves me cold.

Thanks for that! Looks like the HBF district it is. Medhead - explode is a euphemism for what happens inside the nappy. Hopefully things change between now at 8 months and 15 months.

Ah. I wouldn't worry about that too much. The Germans are pretty good with kids facilities and such.
