Just joined up AFF.
We are flying to South America with TAM airlines in November.
Can someone tell me is it worth joining up their frequent flyer program.Currently we are with One World.Next year I believe TAM are joining One World.
Thank you.

psaccaro Welcome to the forum :)

Flying to South America with TAM airlines from where ?
If you join the TAM ffp you will have orphan miles. Most freq flyer program (ffp) do not allow transfer to other ffp's.

Which OneWorld airline do you now have a ffp with? Better to check if you can get miles into that ffp or another airtlines ffp that you may use the future. Some low cost air fares earn nil miles in some ffp's

We are flying from Melbourne. We are with the Qantas FF program. Looks like we do not earn any points.

From the OW website
[h=3]TAM[/h]TAM is the leading carrier of Brazil, Latin America's largest economy and the region's biggest air travel market.

It will transition from the Star Alliance to oneworld in the second quarter of 2014.

TAM operates to 60 destinations in 16 countries in Latin America, the USA and Europe, with a fleet of 161 aircraft operating 800 departures daily. It boarded 37.7 million passengers in 2011. It will add 35 destinations to theoneworld map.

Its Paraguayan subsidiary will also transition to oneworld.

Had quite a few TAM flights in J this year which I decided to credit to my Krisflyer account.

If you have an existing *A FF account I'd credit it there rather than 'orphaning' points with TAM which was said earlier.

If TAM are heading to OW might provide an important missing link re OZ-NA-SA-OZ circles.

TAM may give more options from NA-SA, particularly into Brasil. However LAN and AA already provide good connections.

For the OP situation, if you are not already a member of any Star Alliance FF program (and have miles) it may still be better than nothing to join TAMs program, once they join OW, you may have enough to redeem a domestic QF flight.

Given TAM does not fly from Australia are these TAM flight numbers [codeshare] on which airline ?

Yes they codeshare with Lan but do not accrue points with Lan/oneworld.
Not 100% sure but I think with Star Alliance the operating carrier determines if you get miles on a codeshare where as with OneWorld its the marketing carrier. So TAM ffp may be the only options

I thought LAN now own TAM? I have some LAN flights next year and their web site comes up as 'LAN/TAM.'

They do but each airline is aligned with there old partners until they combine in 2014. I flew numerous LAN & TAM flights this year and got LAN points to QF and my TAM flights to AirNZ (iirc)
