TAP Portugal (a Star Alliance member) is offering a status match challenge to people that already have elite status with another airline outside of Star Alliance. Could be another shortcut to Star Alliance status (in addition to the existing TK and UA status matches).

Oneworld Sapphire & Emerald status (Qantas Gold/Platinum) is eligible to get the match to Star Alliance Gold, as is SkyTeam Elite Plus, Emirates Skywards Gold/Platinum, GOL Diamante or Azul Diamante status. You can also match Qantas Silver/Oneworld Ruby etc. to Star Alliance Silver.

To take part, you have to register for the TAP Miles&Go program and provide a copy of your current frequent flyer membership card, then join Club TAP Miles&Go or purchase miles, by 31 March 2020. The status will be valid until 30 September 2020, but you can extend it by earning 25,000 miles (for Gold) or 10,000 miles (for Silver) by 30/9/20.

Offer is only available to new members who joined the TAP frequent flyer program on/after 1 January 2020.

From the TAP website:

TAP Air Portugal said:
To be eligible, you must be a member of a status/miles programme that is covered by this scheme (see below). Only registered TAP Miles&Go clients will automatically be eligible to participate in the Challenge from Mars 2, 2020. When registering with the TAP Miles&Go Programme, you must provide your Customer Card from another eligible Miles Status/Program that proves you have a status that is the equivalent of the TAP Miles&Go status you are applying for. If you are already registered in the Program since January 1, 2020 you can participate in the Challenge by sending an email to [email protected], with your name and TAP Miles&Go Client number, as well as your Customer Card from another eligible Miles Status/Program that proves you have a status that is the equivalent of the TAP Miles&Go status you are applying for.

Once you have signed up you must join a Club TAP Miles&Go or purchase miles at our miles store in order to be eligible for Silver or Gold status.

TAP is offering a status match opportunity for non-Star Alliance members. It seems to require a small outlay of USD and status is valid for six months, during which you can qualify for a longer status period.

TAP Air Portugal is offering to status match customers with existing status in a non-Star Alliance frequent flyer program. During enrollment there’s an option for the match – attach image of current card or screen shot showing status.

In order to be eligible for the match you must either buy one of TAP Miles&Go Clubs or purchase miles by March 31. Clubs are recurring purchases of miles and some include status miles and benefits, ranging in price from $122 to $887.

They’ll actually be offering triple the up front miles when joining a club March 9 – 31, so it’s worth waiting until March 9 to do so. For instance the $122 plan normally gives you 2000 miles up front (and 1000 each month). During the promotion the up front amount will be 6000 miles.

So weird. Just sell the status and get it over with.

Will you be taking up the 'once in a lifetime' match, Mr Danger? :-)

Prior to starting the thread, I used the Google search function to search for thread titles with the words "status match" with a time period of the last 24 hours and it returned nothing. This is one of the reasons I don't start new threads.

Ha. I see what you did there!

Just received the below email... somewhat regretting it at the moment, though, as the odds of me doing any meaningful travel before September on *A (if at all) isn’t looking good...

Cheers,

It is rather poor timing. :(

Glad it worked out though. Perhaps they'll extend the offer given current circumstances.

Cheers,

Hopefully under current circumstances they can offer you an extension.
Just out of curiosity what FF program and level did you apply for the match with and what other information did they require from you?

I matched to QFF Platinum as a new TAP Miles&Go signup. In the sign up form there is an optional field with associated requirement for uploading an existing FF account to be matched.

As soon as that was done and I had the account number, I just signed in and found where to buy miles - the minimum was 4,000 but promo bonus miles means I have 8,000 available (unlikely to ever be used... unless anyone has any ideas?). Cost was equivalent to A$119 at that point.

That was all done on March 7th, and the confirmation came yesterday, 13 days later.

Cheers,
Matt.

TAP Air Portugal have extended the validity of the status match to April 30 2021.... which hopefully means I should be able to get some *A value out of my $119, now! My status is yet to update to Gold (I had confirmation it was successful), but they do say it could be April 20th before this would happen.

Looks like they've also extended the promotion date until 30 April 2020, for members that join the program after 1 April 2020.

Ok, thanks mattg. It's a shame, I have about 4000 miles with TAP and was looking at using them again next year.

Only airline status I have at the moment is Alaskan so guess I can't take advantage of this.

No - not unless they re-introduce it again after Alaskan joins OW, next year!
