the taxes and charges are $540.xx for 2 economy award seats with QF. Emirates charges and taxes are $157.xx for the same trip on the same dates. i think i'll keep my points for later and pay the fare of $524.xx plus $157.xx taxes with emirates.

(all of this is for 2 people too.) that just seems over the top on QF taxes and charges ...

heck, i will even see what emirates can do in business class for the short flight across the pond.

In January I used AA miles for 3 x business class Qantas flights BNE-MEL-AKL-MEL-BNE. For three people the total cost was $148.43. Two of the passengers were under 16yo so did not have to pay the $38 AU tax. For the exact same flights, Qantas wanted over $700 and 3 times the number of points/miles as AA (300,000 vs 105,000).

yup trans-tasman is generally not a good use of points

there are some recent thread comparing prices and services on trans-tasman

Wow! That is almost a return airfare for 1 person. :(

It appears that no one can put a stop to this absurd situation continuing.

That is more than the return airfare for 1 person in the recent sales, and almost return airfares for 2 people.

Where are you flying from in Oz?

Until the end of this month, one can purchase a return fare on Qantas AKL-MEL/SYD-AKL for NZD430!
Code:
Price Breakdown
Fare Charges/taxes Total Price for 1 adult

204.00 + 225.66 = 429.66 (NZD)

Ok, how about ex Oz.

What about MEL-AKL-MEL?

Yes, with the currant sale it can be had for AUD468.
Code:
Price Breakdown
Fare Charges/taxes Total Price for 1 adult

278.00 + 189.86 = 467.86 (AUD)

The OP mentions that taxes & charges for 2 return economy tickets to NZ are ~A$540. We don't know the originating city or the routing.

As mentioned by serfty above the taxes & charges ex MEL for 2 paid tickets to NZ are ~$380 and I think taxes & charges ex SYD for 2 paid tickets to NZ are ~$400.

OK, I am confused. There shouldn't be any difference in taxes & charges for award tickets or paid tickets. Can someone please explain this anomaly?

I assumed it was to do with routing; each segment adds a minimum of $40 pp.

Hence my preamble question: "Where are you flying from in Oz?".

sorry guys, it was from bne to akl return. i got my info from the qf website for 14th of june out and 17th of june back.

The more sectors the more it costs these days; I see no direct award flights AKL/BNE are currently available. It's a bit tough 6 weeks out.

You can go via SYD each way for 57,600 points + the $540 return in +++. (Normally 72K FF ppints but a 20% discount applies using SEEAKL20 code.)

OR

Purchase on Qantas.com BNE-AKL-BNE return fares for those dates; pp cost is presently an inclusive $466 each with the current sale.

When is autumn this year? Between 2 & 3pm this Friday?

Hehehe. My original comment was "I thought you guys had done away with autumn"

enjoying a nice long indian summer

makes a change to still need aircon in May (not good for skiers though)

Summer? In NZ? I was there in January/February and if that is summer then I need a new dictionary!

I will see what it is like in Queenstown in November!

I still think NZ only has 2 seasons. Autumn and Winter....
