Trying to book an AAdvantage flight LHR to DOH - the only flight showing is BA125 and the the taxes are a ridiculous USD515. I know BA taxes are higher but I also tried booking QF2 LHR-SYD and the taxes are USD387. Why are the taxes so much more out of the UK? From Australia the AA taxes are minimal.

Its the UK government APD, unfortunately. Can you fly out from another country but transit through LHR?

AA charges a fuel surcharge on all BA flights, but not on QF flights.

You are confusing real taxes with carrier imposed fees (fuel surcharges, etc )
They are not the same.

This is the correct answer.Example on last weekend I booked F Aawards JFK-LHR.Had the choice of BA or AA flights. If the BA flight was ~ $US190.For AA $US2.50 as add on.

So is that the same for Qantas and AA
I booked a business class seat Melbourne to Perth via Qantas
Taxes were $110 Approx
Then I checked on AA which for some reason had better availability than Qantas and the taxes were only $55
half that if Qantas
can anyone tell me why is that ?
should the ACCC look into this both on availability and taxes charged ?

It is because of the agreement with BA and IB on Trans Atlantic routes. So they charge BAs fuel charges.Doesn't apply to other airlines and certainly not with QF.

Its annoying that when booking QF SYD-LHR taxes on AAdvantage are only around USD75 but the return flight LHR-SYD the taxes on AAdvantage are USD387. Just noticed that its much cheaper if I book EK out of Paris to Aus... taxes only EUR85. Looks like Eurostar and a few days in Paris!

Was this trying to use QF points ($110) or AA miles ($55)
Read post 4 and others posts above. QF freq flyer charges surcharges (per the terms & conditions you have agreed to). AA does not

Do you know where I can get some information on the additional charges on a frequent flyer booking on Qantas ?

Any departure from the UK is subject to "Air Passenger Duty".

For UK to Australia this can be as much as £184. (USD275)

You will find that most trans Atlantic flights booked with AA miles and chosen close to the date of travel will almost always be on BA and not AA metal, of course the taxes are the reason, the AA flights will always be chosen first for this reason.
