As far as I can see, Melb looses out . Why is this so, it seems to me that it happens a lot. Just look at EK and the A380, which only goes to Sydney. Can any body give me any reasons why.

Passenger volumes would have something to do with it - as I understand it, SYD is about 50% busier than MEL in terms of passenger traffic. Also SYD is obviously the most popular airport for tourists arriving in Australia. I am sure others with a deeper knowledge of this matter will offer other, perhaps better reasons. :)

How so?

If you mean missing out on sale fares, maybe its simply oversupply in SYD-BKK market, so TG offering good fares to get backsides into seats. Currently on SYD-BKK each day you have EK, TGx2, BA & QF. MEL-BKK you have TGx2 and JQx0.4... MEL is lot more competitive to SIN & KUL due to EK (SIN) and Air Asia (KUL).

Exactly, there's a lot of deals I've seen out of Melbourne that don't have anything for Sydney. Just a matter of the particular routes.

Sydney is 100% more passengers than Melbourne, but Melbourne has also had capacity issues that should be resolved now.

Major International Airports (a)
Passengers Feb-10/% of Total
Sydney 895 188/44.2%
Melbourne 448 497/22.2%
Brisbane 304 459/15.0%
Perth 225 992/11.2%

The top 10 airlines make for some interesting reading, Air Asia appears to be the quiet achiever:

Share of passengers carried Feb-09 Feb-10
Qantas Airways ............... 22.9%.... 18.8%
Singapore Airlines............. 10.5%.... 9.8%
Jetstar............................. 7.1%.... 8.0%
Air New Zealand ................ 9.1%.... 7.8%
Emirates .......................... 7.4%.... 7.7%
Cathay Pacific Airways........ 6.1%.... 5.9%
Pacific Blue....................... 5.5%.... 5.9%
Thai Airways International ... 4.0%.... 3.6%
Malaysia Airlines ............... 3.3%.... 3.3%
AirAsia X ........................ 1.6%.... 3.1%

I did : Yawn and no deal. $1350 for xmasy dates.

Check out AirAsia: KUL to MEL around Christmas+/- 1 week.
KL to MEL $105 AUD , including taxes, or $150 with a few extras.

I'm confident AirAsia is about to announce Sydney/KL deals at similar or better prices. So far there has been gentle collusion not to discount .au outbound, with the exception of hard to fill Osaka flights. AirAsias 93% increase is a sign of things to come.

Bogstar's 6th birthday sale now past, had some fair prices from MEL going out. Hey AirAsia - how about a 'Red Shirt' sale for all those booking from SYD to BKK!
