Hi all,
With all the negativity that has been directed to AmEx lately - I thought I would "mix things up a little", and send them a "thank you".
I am a Centurion card holder, and have just returned home from a trip to the U.S. As it happens, I was able to take advantage of AmEx's "free" night at either a Fairmont or Raffles property. (I say "free" - because I guess we do end up paying for it in our yearly fee). My hubby and I stayed at The Fairmont in San Francisco. It was WONDERFUL !!
I will admit though, I had a bit of a giggle at check in. Hubby and I had been out for the day touring Alcatraz, so not really fitting the "part" of all those around us in the lobby. Tee shirts and shorts - that kind of attire, was us. The gentleman at Priority Check In was indeed a little "snooty" towards us - until he realised why we were there etc etc etc. My real first "moment" with the Centurion card, as opposed to the customary "gee, it's heavy" ! LOL.
We were upgraded from a standard room - which I am sure would have been suffice, to a Main Building Balcony Suite - which was just awesome ! I also received upon check in a Fairmont branded suit/gown bag and a hand written card from the Manager. I joked that the suit bag would keep my Budweiser tshirt nice and clean - the check in clerk failed to see the humour in this
There was a complimentary bottle of red wine (Merlot - 2001) in the room (very nice drop), and water and chocolates. Check out was 11am - but we were also offered late check out until 2pm, which we took advantage of - before we moved across to the Mark Hopkins Intercontinental across the street.
All up - it was a fantastic place to stay. Probably a little too upmarket for my tastes, but we certainly were treated like valued guests once it was ascertained why we were there. I know, I know - all guests should be treated the same etc etc - but this post is more about the fact that AmEx got it "right" and we had a wonderful time and it didn't cost us a cent at the end of it.
I still don't know if I "win or lose" with the new points structure - but a promotion like this one, that I can actually use, sure makes me feel all "warm and fuzzy" inside.
Thanks,
Brooke
