Flying midday you will find the elusive free upgrades to J dear friends! Just off flight from SYD to BNE and had the most delightful FA looking after us: Sarah - couldn't do enough... So happy I fly DJ!

Pretty sure the bloke next to me was seriously unimpressed though that all he got was his flexi-meal plated beautifully, whereas another lucky traveller and I that were bumped up were served the most delicious J-class meal with all the trimmings.. Ah, life is fine being Platinum.

I wonder why someone who has had an operational upgrade would expect an airline to cater for more than the booked pax? At home I sure wouldn't cater for 8 when 4 people RSVP'd...

So they put a pax in the J cabin and served him an economy meal? That's interesting.

This is pretty standard in airline catering, unless they over cater the flight (usually by accident because it would be costly/wasteful) or have a J ticket cancelled.

Can't say I've heard of it happening before (could be wrong though). I'd be very surprised to sit in the QF J cabin and see my seat mate being served the Y meal. Would seem to devalue the product quite a bit.

They usually print a message under service information on the boarding pass saying "catering not guaranteed" or something to that effect.

Sorry to spoil, but the ( eighth ) word in the opening line is tacky, to say the least..

Yes. I've had that once when I changed to an earlier flight (not an upgrade) on QF. When the meals came around, the FA started serving me the J meal. I did say to her that I was a last minute addition to the flight and did not want to take someone's meal. She thanked me for telling her but said they had plenty on the flight.

The info also appears on the passenger manifest, I have seen it in action where the meals were served to selected passengers first and what was left was offered to the newbies.

I had to redeem a DJ last minute J points seat because there were no other flights available and on that flight I chose row 1. During the meal service the FA started at row 1 and went backwards and when she got to row 3, the last row of J, the FA pronounced "sorry we've run out of meals, but you can have anything from the menu". I sort of felt bad cos I assumed it was because I added myself at the last minute.

I thought I was just lucky for choosing row 1, but do they normally prepare meals vs particular pax beforehand?

I have always seen 8+ meals loaded for J on all my flights, both the cheese service and full meal service, and even when there is only 1 or 2 people in J

DJ only has two rows in J unless its the big boys.

What sort of aircraft were you on? The 737-800s and E190s only have two rows of business class, and the A330s have four?
