The end is nigh ... [NOT YET] for bmi Diamond Club

I got a status match a while ago to BMI gold so it will be interesting to see if they transfer any status to M&M...

Say it ain't so!!!:( RIP, the most generous FFP that ever existed... There's also some talk that the move to M+M is optional, though I doubt it as "optional" in the case of some previous mergers meant you had some time to use any remaining miles before they shut down your account permanently.

Good analysis by Raffles here:

Well good thing I burnt through quite a bit of my account balance the other day - M+M redemptions are significantly more expensive!

I hope they do a like for like transfer - wouldn't mind LH SEN status till 2013.

I don't like how LH M+M has a strict 3 year expiry on miles, although if you are a LH credit card holder, FTL, SEN or HON, it seems the clock is stopped for you.

Not bad; assuming LH will match BD*G for LH SEN, then that gives one five years to do something about their balance. Hopefully by that time a useful LH award (or companion award) can be earned and redeemed (if retaining SEN is hard enough :().

Nooooooooooo! Luckily I have burnt most of my DC miles already, but I may still have enough to get one more flight out of it.

I was status matched about 18 months ago (thanks to help from QF009) so now a lowly Silver. I would be interested in moving across if I can hangon to some sort of status with a *A airline as I burnt all my points on some fun J flights across to ICN, LAX, BKK, HKG and NRT.

All points + cash and bloody good value.

That said - BMI is a joke with getting points to post. Been chasing them for Hertz and Europecar points for months and have been getting no where. Was even told the rental didn't qualify because I used a corporate code, the same one the said to use on the promo!

I've got about 25k destination miles right now...perhaps another 2k pouring in soon (although given the lag time between event and crediting, I'm not holding my breath).

Now how to burn them....

Ouch this could hurt I have just built my blanace over the last 12 months and got Gold status, that's just hit 130K. Maybe a trip from Singapore to Uzbekistan or Turkmenistan (45K in J) is a good starting point and another to Tahiti or Cook Islands (75K in J )....

It will be a shame as excellent earning on multi night Hilton stays. (where else can you get 3000 FF pts for a stay - in addition to HHonors pts)

Well if Diamond Club is being closed, then it would be sad but unsurprising news. It is simply way too generous to be profitable.

Not so much a mountain - more likely stong assertion on how BMI DC is such a relatively generous program.

What a fuss some people made over this before anything official was announced.

We have come to expect the worst of loyalty programs and rumours about them. And not surprising really, given the history of "enhancements" to a wide range of airline, hotel and other loyalty programs.

Perhaps you might like to change the thread title, official word from Diamond Club is Diamond Club is NOT CLOSING DOWN

Please don't worry - Diamond Club is not closing (Official) - FlyerTalk Forums

A bit hard not to stop people from going nuts about it. I had to half panic a bit, since it's not a move that's completely out of reality.

These things are not like NoNews beat ups of a plane which dipped a few thousand feet and threw a few people like rag dolls.

In any case, I've edited the first post and the sub-title, but I can't seem to edit the title of the thread itself. Maybe I need Mod intervention.

I was concerned but the mass hysteria that flooded the internet was kinda over the top IMO. Anyway, it's a good result for now!
:p

bmi Diamond Club may not be closing down yet...

...but the word on the street is that it will happen, and perhaps quite soon.

Got this on my FT updates:

The 'FUTURE OF BMI' thread, the LH takeover, & what it might mean for Diamond Club... - Page 32 - FlyerTalk Forums

The following is my interpretation of events and should not be held as gospel:

There's a presentation there given by the bmi CEO to the LH group outlining the changes to BD as it starts to become more integrated into the LH Group's operations. It'd be interesting to see if BD becomes another of LH's fully integrated partner airlines (e.g. flying BD credits for HON qualification).

The most striking aspect is that eventually under the current integration plan Diamond Club will cease to exist. Already, some BD members with addresses in some countries have been moved from DC to LH Miles & More: BD*S to FTL and BD*G to SEN. (I think this was more a 'test and see' process rather than a progressive move, as there have been delays and bugs in the moving process according to FT.) I imagine when DC does eventually get phased out a similar process will occur.

As usual with reactions to this kind of news, some members on FT are planning for a DC close as soon as 2011 or 2012. As much as they (we) are hoping for a good match deal when DC members are moved into M&M (e.g. if matched status in M&M, have status guaranteed for at least 2 years), many are also planning to burn BD miles as soon as possible. Whether this is an overreaction or not is always debatable or not to be debated (also as usual!).

I've been crediting flights to BMI for the past 12 months and it has been great for me. If they do close, I will definitely redeem all my points out of it.
In practice though, it is always good to burn all the miles if possible, to keep the balance down. After all, these points do not earn interest.

Hopefully I can get the Family Membership thing to work before they close down, I've been trying on and off for the last 6 months. I'll probably credit to Krisflyer from now on.
