Canadians can leave their country in a car. We don't have a choice but to fly.

Interesting perspective. I think the article highlights more cultural differences and resultant paralysis. We are a litte hard on ourselves at times.

Air Canada also remains protected from competition from Emirates, and they still can't succeed.

I don't think Qantas is necessarily responding to consumers as given in the article. There's certainly a lot of sentiment that Qantas pursued its "survival" at the right royal expense of its customers. The stroke was heavily criticised across Australia as well as internationally. I don't think there was near close to one media piece which praised Qantas for its "bravery" or actions. (This article might be the first.)

At the end, the only things that matter are:
  • Customers don't care about workers. They only care about themselves, and what they can get out of the airline. They don't care that the crew uniforms are made in China. They don't care that a crew member was sick and that's what caused the flight to be late. They don't care that the weather is horrible and that's why the airline has had to delay or cancel their flight.
  • Shareholders don't care at all what their company represents. They can be ethical or non-ethical. They can have zero accidents or one hundred accidents. They can abuse human rights, and shareholders don't bat an eyelid. They just want to get paid.
  • Capitalism is king in Western societies because society says that's what's best. If a company has to die, it should die, and no one should care at all. In real life, if you're rock climbing and your friend's rope snaps, you try and save him. In capitalism, you let him be and see him fall to his death.

You can wax lyrical about how companies do it, but in the end it's a plain cruel world out there. So adieu Air Canada, if that is what it comes to, so long and thanks for all the fish.

That's probably premature. I'm sure there's something up AC's sleeve that will keep them open somehow, even without the unwarranted government intervention.

Another surprise? Jetstar being heralded as a success story component of Qantas. :-|
