Well, economy class seats.

From news.com.au:

A NEW airline seat designed to help travellers sleep and provide more privacy has been unveiled, but will Australians get to use them?

UK design house Thompson Solutions say the new “Cozy Suite” seats are “a major step forward in passenger comfort” and cater towards the growing size of passengers, but no Australian-based airlines have purchased it.

One point of controversy is its fixed backshell, designed to save many an argument as it doesn’t recline into the person seated behind. However, some passengers are unhappy about not being able to lean the seat back.

"You can't recline the seat. Guaranteed failure," one unhappy traveller said.

Others say that removing the ability to recline the seat will have a limited impact.

Thomson have previously come up with innovative seating arrangements (for example the staggered arrangement shown) but I don't know if any airlines have adopted them.

The "reclining" issue seems to generate so much animosity that any design which limits backward incursion must surely be a winner?

Depends if you can sleep upright.... i cant. (But i try to choose the select rows like row 41 in the kangaroo config QF 744's so no argumants there)
But if the seat sort of slides forward then i guess its ok.

They look like reasonable seats.

I wonder how much they weight ? apart from initial cost this could be a consideration as to why they have not been looked at more.

I am not aware of any majoe airline using the Thompson seating, but always interested to try.

From a design perspective I agree - but the lowest common denominator will win out - people have to recline - it's their right!

so these designs can't even recline 'forward' so to speak to create room.... hmmmm

Don't Cathay's new economy seats have a fixed seatback, but still allow a "sliding" recline?

Why not just go with that design? Or is that what these do already?

Yes the CX seats are like that as are the new JAL i believe. But i have not seen or seated on either yet. I am interested to know because i like both to have my space and recline.
I am not so sure the new seats have that good reviews though.

These Thompson seats look like they are designed so you can sort on the side of the seat, an ok idea from the looks, only a trial will tell if it really is any good.

The old argument never goes away. Just like recliners have a right to recline, non-recliners also have a right not to have a recliner in their face.

What is wrong with a seat that slides forward allowing the person to be in a reclined position but at the same time allows the person behind to fully utilise the space they purchased in the first place? Win win situation for all....

I have flown with the new CX Y Shell seats for short haul (HKG-MNL) and I think they are be best Y seat out there. I will be flying overnight HKG-MEL next week, so I will see how they compare the QF Y for an overnight flight... I will report back then if you are interested...

I like the look of those. I'd give it a go if an airline would install them.
