The Pinot Noir & Grenache Thread

In the company of the ethereal floral verbosity of beefarmer and the other usual suspects , I'm enormously reluctant to comment.

however

I have scoffed 5 of my Layla's and I'm working my way through my Rockferry Estate's but not buying any more.
Layla is a bit like the girl next door , warm familiar perfumed available and easy company ..
whereas the Rockferry is ,perhaps, like dating the Headmaster's daughter…
It presents clothed in many layers, initially reserved and quite standoffish, but when warmed and aired exhibiting some eclectic spice tones (albeit still somewhat dry)

Summary : Layla's warm spice is all she has to offer while the Rock is a deeper and more involving experience and to that end much harder work……………...

Picked up a case of the Martinborough Pinot 2013 tonight.
I got a bottle a few weeks back, then another, then tonight took the plunge on a 6 pack.

It's my kind of Pinot, spicy, complex, and really full bodied, for the $26 a bottle I paid it is a fantastic wine. Highly recommended to lovers of more savoury Pinot

The 2014 just got 95 points from Bob Campbell.

RE: Squitchy Lane Pinot Special - if anyone else has ordered and not received anything yet.

Followed up my order today by email having received only an initial order confirmation email last week, Michelle replies saying that had sold out of the allocation they set aside for the discounted deal so my order was never actually processed with their dispatch, but have honored my order from their stock within the cellar door and receiving end of this week.

Pretty happy with that.

Hm , wondered why I hadn't heard anything .
I have just emailed and enquired , wonder if they will honour all the orders ?

As posted in the Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals thread, [post=1484820]Ray Jordan's Top 100 Reds[/post] rated Eddystone Point 2014 95pts ($25.20 @ Dan Murphy's) and best wine. Devil's Corner Resolution 2014 and Hardy’s HRB 2014 were next at 94pts.

[post=1481443]Tony Love's Top 100 Wines[/post] included Tapanappa Foggy Hill 2014 with 5-stars, and these received 4.5-stars: Stoney Rise 2015, Giant Steps 2015, Nepenthe Good Doctor 2013 [post=1338420]($14.90 @ Vinomofo)[/post], Pike and Joyce Vue du Nord 2015.

d’Or to Door has Lowburn Ferry Home Block Pinot Noir 2014 for $39 ($45 @ Langton's), which has received good reviews, including 95pts from Bob Campbell for the previous two vintages, and is highly rated by a few people on Vivino (3.9-4.7)

They also have aged Burgundy and Bordeaux from a private cellar in Paris

I've been meaning to start a thread like this for a while, ever since [post=1308856]these[/post] [post=1309234]comments[/post], and so now finally...

Events & Tastings

There are four good annual pinot noir tasting events that I know about (please post about others), with one of them being held in Sydney this Saturday - tomorrow:

Pinot Heaven @ Bellevue Hill Bottle Shop (Sydney)
Saturday 4th June @ 2pm
Free
~100 wines

This Saturday at 4pm, Bellevue Hill Bottle Shop are having a rehash of the top ten from the event last month:

Bouchard Beaune Marconnets 1er Cru 2012
Curlewis Bel Sel 2013
Pooley Cooinda Vale 2014
Napa Cellars 2012
Bannockburn 2013
The Wanderer 2012
Dexter 2015
Satyr Foothills 2014
Apsley Gorge 2011
Voltumna 2011

Thanks qaz and others for your inputs. I have read every post in this thread since I stumbled upon it. I've bought and enjoyed the Hoddles Ck, Bream Ck, de Bortoli Estate, Seppelt Henty etc. They all taste fine but lack that nose that keeps on evolving and just begs you back for more. I guess what I was hoping to find for around $30 was a $50-60 RRP Aus/NZ Pinot that I could indulge in most weekends without shelling out for the full Burgundian experience. Can anyone whose tasted the recent VM Rock Ferrys tell me whether they drink like a $60 bottle?

Perhaps you could help by letting us know some of the cheapest examples that satisfy you?

Having exchanged a number of emails with her, Michelle wrote this afternoon, back from leave, that my wine was re-sent today after it had not been received a month ago - I ordered early June.

You would think every single one of them would be honoured.

We can but hope .. ... the website that they manage accepted my order.

After all I was hoping to have some of their wine...

And I was also hoping to enjoy their wine ..

aaaand ….perhaps tell anyone who is listening about their wine….. and how much I did (or did not) enjoy their wine...

I can but hope…. :-)

My local DM had these couple of French Pinots on a clearance table for just under $50, I know nothing about French wines so was hoping to appeal to those more knowledgeable as to whether they are good buys or not. The Rossignol seems quite highly rated on Vivino from what I can see. Thanks in advance for any advice offered :)

Not had either, but under $50 for premier cru Burgundy you can't be unhappy :) Enjoy and let us know your thoughts.

That reminds me, I should actually go into Dan's more often to pick up the unadvertised specials.

Had to restrict myself to just the Nicolas Rossignol as part of the budget got diverted into 2015 Coldstream Hills Pinot for $14, 2011/12 Teusner Dog Strangler for $13.50 & the best of all 2013 Freycinet Vineyards Pinot for $24.80!

All deleted lines apparently, so yes Penegal it may be a good time to see if there is a clearance table at your local DM :)

Those who haven't gotten onto the squitchy are missing out. I'm 3 bottles deep and this 94 pt yarra valley pinot at 12.50 / bottle is a steal. Beefarmer - best comparison I can give is to your recommendation of the top paddock at $10 / bottle...this smashes it.

I purchased a dozen Squitchy and it's just not me. Sorry.
Give me the Mike Press any day At $15.83 (think I paid $12.50 as a member) over the Squitchy.

I'm still waiting for my Pinot mentor to review this wine and the review might be that it's cough.

great finds - wish my locals had such clearances :)

+1 ordered as quaffer for others with less discerning tastes than I :)

not worth more than $15/bt imo - barely as good as the poor 2014 De Bortoli Estate Grown

haven't had any Mike Press or [post=1483802]Rock Ferry Cawte's Cave[/post] (2013 $15), but the cheapest drinkable/satisfying/acceptable/likeable pinot noirs for me have been Heirloom 2012 ($9.92, Winemarket), Trapeze 2012 ($16, Vinomofo), Mount Pleasant Mothervine 2014 ($18.33, McWilliam's)

otherwise, it's of course Hoddles Creek as usually the best under $20 (2015 $17.10) :)

+1 the Hoddles Creek. I'm now waiting with trepidation on the arrival of the Squitchy!

Just imagine it's a first date Sedi. Start slowly admiring what both of you have brought to the table. Sedi, don't ruin the date with any old wine glass. You have to look your best, bring out something special, something befitting of the exhilaration of anticipation. (Although that has been questioned. More on that latter.) So a fine wine glass is necessary. As someone who has been on the odd date, I like to bring my Rogaska expert pinot out. No muckin' around there, imbibing royalty. Large bulb, fine stem, no thorns. Sounds like a flower doesn't it, perhaps a rose, perhaps befitting the fernery that surrounds the initial vine in a winery. A femine touch to perhaps the most feminine of wines. For another time, a description of varietal and a person who befits the name.

So, as you pour you admire. But before that, just like a date, scent and colour are so important. Does the wine come dressed in moccasins smelling of the perfumery at David Jones? Does it come with knee high boots from Peppermint Grove. Is the oak the finest French or tossed in pieces? How do I think of this **** when I haven't even had a drink. I dunno.

Then the excitement really takes over. All your friends have told you about this new date. Cheap, sure. Cheap and nasty, hopefully not. Premature exciteability was never your problem. But in the back of your mind, your pals have taken her out and givin her the flick after one date. That can't be good, as you were looking for a longer term relationship, possibly even twelve dates. Like one of my stock market expressions, don't pass over someone's old girlfriend. You take the next vital move. Your lips are about to lock. The tension is building and building, all these voices in one ear saying, chanting, screaming at you but in the other ear there is just one...... one lonesome, solitary, quivering, almost angelic voice that sounds like the lead singer of Pearl Jam. He loves the number 50. He is cautiously optimistic because he knows one thing that's very important. This new wine leaves the Top Paddock for dead and as far as I am concerned, I believe him. Call me a fool if you may, but his reputation is on the line here.

So back to you Sedimental. We see your lovely pictures with the lovely wines you drink. We love the cows, the wild animals. But what we will really love is for you to give us all the inside story of how your first date ended up. .........
