hahah... that is a great read...

he must have a very very very understanding wife (who has now been paid big dividends!)

wow, he's a legend indeed. Now that's getting excellent mileage value.... around 0.25 cents per mile!

There are other stories in a similar Ilk - eg "Mr Pickles" (Free Vacations, Mr. Pickles and the U.S. Mint | NBC Washington ), and of course the AFF members who earned many points in the Amex "5000 for 5" promotion that was in late 2008.

Finding these opportunities is very difficult. Plus of course companies seem to want to lock down anyone who earns "too many" points from promotions.

Seems odd that a story this old would pop up again in someone else's blog.

There's been a few stories of people buying miles or items that give bonus miles at dirt cheap prices, and a few mileage-millionaires out there as a result.

Odd that no-one posted a link to the original source:

or his wikipedia article:

IIRC, I joined Flyertalk (Jan 4, 00) soon after Pudding Guy made his famous post (Dec 21, 99).

... and of course the AFF members who earned many points in the Amex "5000 for 5" promotion that was in late 2008.

NB, AFAIK noone ever got published in the newspaper or online here in Australia, for their Amex MR earnings. I guess AFF members aren't as interested as being in the media.

The latest botched promo was the Priority Club Quiz game fiasco:
Priorityclub is locking accounts after the QUIZ Game - FlyerTalk Forums

At least Priority Club were quick to fix the problem (by locking accounts, etc), and even gave most of those affected members 5000 PC points.

The recovery by PC on that issue was quite good IMHO, it was interesting to read the posts of people with reservations in the near future squirming and ranting because their account was locked

Yes The Pudding Guy is real.

Being very aware of his success, was an influence in my own Carpe Diem moment when the Amex Everyday Promo came along. If had not known his story I probably would not have pushed so hard.

The key lesson from The Pudding Guy was that when opportunities present that some legwork and creative thinking can really capitalise on such an opportunity.

Over time there has been quite a number of "Goldern Promos"...but yes they are relatively rare and for an individual you may only be in the right place at the right time once.

In the USA however it would seem that you might get a crack at a major promo about every year or so.There have been at least two within the last year for largish point earns.

In Australia..we are not so blessed.

I became a serious Points Runner about the time I read about the exploits of the Pudding Guy and a number of other large earning promos that had been exploited by various people and most of which had been written up on Flyertalk. That was not long after I started browsing this forum and a few like forums. Reading of their succes really galvanised my thinking, and more importantly committment.

That was my Epiphany.

For many The Pudding Guy is great story. For me it was a new beginning.

Now prior to that ever since I started flying lot in my previous employ I had yes acquired frequent flyer points by various means. ie flying, accommodation, credit card hotels etc. I was a Platinum with Ansett and was regularly redeeming for domestic and international flights.

But my Epiphany resulted in my moving into earning and burning points in a lot more scientific manner. To really think about how strategically I could acquire more points, and also how those points could be redeemed in the best manner for my circumstances and requirements. Earn and Burn...and maximising both. For example I am now earning (when extra bonii are not on offer) a minimum of 1.5points per $ on Amex and 1.0 on VISA rather than the previous 1.o/0.5 that I was earning. Flight wise for redeeming I swapped from QF to SQ.

I now have changed careers for lifestyle reasons and do not have anywhere near the amount of paid work travel that I had in the past and yet due to my Epiphany I am now earning considerably more points each year and getting more bang for my earnt points as well.

Looking at my records.

I peaked on 5 March 2009 when I had 3.4 million points

Since then I have redeemed 997,500 points on flights.

But totalling up my accounts today I still have 2.8 million points.
So in less than a year I have still managed to aquire 400K.

Without maximising one’s earn that would have only been say 150K or less. The extra has come from chasing extra bonus point earn/$ on cards, a 10K sign on with Westpac,a bit here and there with opportunities such as Woolworths Everday points, and 71k from BMI for in the main doing a few quick surveys/sign-ons (all free apart from one $130 car rental). In that period there have also been various deals such as the current QF Ultimate deal where one can effectively buy points cheaply for the yearly fee. But with a large points balance I have refrained. If my points balance became small I would probably take up some of these as it would still be cheap flying.

But apart from earning more points I am now burning lot better with a lot more point bang!!! That 997500 of points in the past (J and F travel) would have cost me more like in excess of 2 million points with the result that I and my family would have been redeeming in Y instead.

And yes this forum has resulted in all sorts of useful tips to urn, burn and ease ones travel and to save money in other ways (ie Wizard Card).

You mean you think everyone in the thread thinks it's a fake?

Whoops again! Damn double negatives...I blame the culture that coined the phrase "We ain't got no stinkin' badges".

What I meant to say is that no one in this thread thinks the story is fiction. Well, except one, who is now converted. :D

Mods, perhaps you should consider deleting that (those) confusing post(s) of mine.......

I ain't gonna do that no more....

No need to delete. Just edit the posts up to 24 hours from the time of post.

Did that AFFer who at one stage was a prolific buyer of cat food & taco seasoning really have 20 million ff flyer points?

IIRC there was a post where he had a query about something ff related which included a snapshot of his ff account balance.
