The view from my "office"

World Press Photo this year very depressing (Amsterdam). Its the fourth time I have been to this annual photojournalism exhibition and - unfortunately - not a single positive story of hope (conflicts everywhere)
I will only post this picture; it was taken by an Australian photojournalist of a man and grandson standing on (what was) the shoreline when the older man grew up. I remember when he won with this picture and it was published in the Melbourne Age. Others too despairing.

Akan Tancho (crane) centre Hokkaido.

An incredible story how luck was the reason there are still Red crowned cranes alive in Japan. In 1950 it was estimated 40-50 left in the wild. During that winter some landed at a farmer's property and he fed them corn. They returned and so survived a brutal winter in 1952. About 300 now visit the original farm in winter and now estimated to be 2000 in Hokkaido.
They have 4 in enclosures plus 1 white necked crane. I found I could talk to the white necked crane by imitating the calls the red crowned crane was making. This is the white necked crane. He kept following me and even stuck his beak through the wire. i walked back about 20 minutes later and as soon as he saw me ran up to the fence again. The bird whisperer strikes again.

So now the red crowned crane. There was no roof to this enclosure.

And then a wild one flew in.

Yes
Its really interesting

There is art in AMS you can see for free too. Some of the smart hotels have recognised art on their foyer walls. Also there used to be a Herman Brood bar and gallery. All you have to do is drink or eat. Can't recall it's correct name. Herman Brood famously killed himself by jumping off the roof of the AMS Hilton.
