re: The view from my "office"

Well the saints be praised for you - they won!
I have completely lost my voice. Jake Long, son of Essendon legend, Michael, played his first AFL game. Best bit in the second quarter ..... "Long to Daniher - GOAL!" It must be 20+ years since we saw or heard those names in a passage of play. Roll on 2017.

I can sort of pick a few words......but what language are you typing?

Ok, so you're not a Victorian ! The names Long and Daniher are revered by the Essendon faithful.

Michael Long was a great indigenous player with Essendon in the 1990s, and is now well known for his efforts to eliminate racism in sport and improving the lives of indigenous people through his "Long Walk" charity.

The Daniher family has a long association with AFL and Essendon. One of the Daniher brothers is Neale, former player who is suffering from Motor Neurone Disease and has dedicated the remainder of his life to raising awareness of the disease (think the "Big Freeze" every Queens birthday weekend). Neale's brothers, Terry and Anthony also played for Essendon in the early 90s.

So in the early 1990s, there would have been instances of Michael Long kicking to a Daniher who then kicked a goal.

Fast forward a "generation" to 2016: Jake Long, son of Michael, and Joe Daniher, son of Anthony are both members of the current Essendon team and this afternoon combined to kick a goal. For some of us old "tragics", hearing the names of two legends of the game again combined as they would have been 26 years ago brings hope for some future success for the club.

Sorry for the long-winded explanation for what is very likely a parochial memory.

As did youngest brother Chris - indeed Kevin Sheedy played all 4 brothers in the one team on the same day on September 1 1990 - The Danihers

Just the minorist of minor corrections but his name is actually Jake Long.

coriander - we need to do a game together sometime.

re: The view from my "office"

Do you get koalas at your place? I thought someone was being murdered in my backyard the first time I heard it!

We do at ours, PQQ has a large Koala population, and we have quite a few visitors. And yes in breeding season they can be quite loud.

But if you catch one-legally doing tagging for the NSW National Parks-they cry like a baby....until they reckon they can get you.
