The view from my "office"

Why does a 7.00am flight seem such a good idea....... until you need to get up at 4.00am?

We started our mini SR this morning: DCA->PHX->DFW->LAX with a little trepidation, but DCA was open for business having escaped the worst of the late snowstorm "Stella" which hit NY and Boston badly. Temperatures of -6oC led to threats of black ice on the roads by the media, but our taxiride to DCA was quick and uneventful.

Arriving at DCA I noted the only AA plane in old livery that I've seen on this trip (LAX, PHX, CLT, DCA):

At 5.30am the spacious Admiral's Club in DCA is all but deserted. Fresh fruit, croissants, bagels and hard-boiled eggs were on offer at the food bar, plus a coffee machine that produced an excuse for a caffe latte.

Unfortunately for me, Mrs C snaffled the window seat so I was only able to shoot the next couple of images over her shoulder.

Just after take-off, we climbed past the Pentagon. At the top of the image you can see the three vertical arms of the Air Force Memorial. Off to the right is the edge of the Arlington National Cemetery.

Five seconds later, one can more clearly see the Cemetery completely blanketed with snow.

Just landed at PHX and ensconced in the PHX broom cupboard AC. Temperature on its way to +36oC.
Next stop DFW, then LAX.

Idle Question: all photos uploaded were the same size in pixel dimensions and similar in file size. Why do they display at different sizes?

They look the same size on the App. Doing a status run today as well. Flight dep at 6am. Alarm set for 4am. I swear I have not slept all night with a combo of cat noise, heat and knowing an alarm going off. It's currently 3.36am and am dressed and now waiting. Gave up on sleep. Gonna be a long day.

Once in a trip is doable but no more than this! Prefer a red eye to save a night on accommodation and not to lose a day sight seeing! If a short flight though then I'll go for am flight so can get fullish day other side. I don't like pm flights generally - nothing to see!

We always start holidays with an earlier opener out of BNE.... that way we get plenty of time for some Flounging and more times than not - F flying.

What is 4am ??? (this body needs as much beauty sleep as it can get, alas 9 hours per night it's still failing.....)

Exactly, the only time I liked seeing that sort of time was when I was working nightshift, coz it meant I was 2/3rds of they way through my shift.

Bit over Auckland - been there quite a few times. Seem to remember quite a bit of rainfall as well on the last few trips.

For the last year MrP has been there every month for a week each time. He's over it. But as this contract finishes he's starting another. He's sick of the rain but last time it was hot and quite unpleasant. He wants me to join him on a NZ trip two days after we get back from Dubai Dame!

AKL is useful - for getting out of there to place a couple of hours drive away. The city itself? It Siucks!

Coromandel peninsular (a bit like the Fleurio(sp?), East cost, Napier is ok, if you can stand sulfur smell then Rotarua can be worth a day or two. Maybe Lake Taupo ...

Don't forget Northland.

If you can handle caves, there's glow worm ones to the south west (use Hamilton as an overnight base).
