My father was in PNG during the war and a number of his friends were killed in action. It is sad, but somehow good to see that they were not forgotten. A few years ago we called at Kanchanaburi in Thailand when on the Eastern Orient Express. On retiring the night before, this was left on the pillow with a card that said we might like to place it on one of the war graves that we would visit. On first look, it seemed to be macrame was was actually fresh flowers and was beautiful.LTL, in two words, it was! I believe the number of headstones is 3824. It is so sad to walk amongst them, looking at the ages. So tragic.
I actually took friend of mine, who is a photographer for a Highland publication and his comment to me was that he had lived in POM all his life and had never visited Bomana cemetery. He said he could not believe how beautiful it was and that he now intended to bring his family next year (wife and three late teenagers).
It was packed this morning, with a lot of PNG kids, who are by nature, very respectful. It was great to witness!

I came across a Papuan headstone. The young un-named man was 18 when he perished. My father was in PNG during the war and a number of his friends were killed in action. It is sad, but somehow good to see that they were not forgotten.
