The view from my "office"

If you are there for dinner, I can recommend Wanha Laammanni, up the hill next to the church. But be careful to follow the instructions if you park your car at one of the meters:

Thanks for the warning Rooflyer, well meant I'm sure but will not be needed. We are going out by bus from Kaampi, and will only be having lunch there. Last time at the Cantina (fish soup etc) and this time the tour director (MrsOatek) has somewhere in mind near the square closer to the river.

Well, for one thing, the staff are not permitted to let their lips touch the alcoholic beverages; for another, many of them wouldn't know - especially if the corking was not overt. The much-vaunted 'sommelier in the sky' by QF a few years back was, like a lot of their stuff, a crock. I only ever met one FA who had done it.

Whether they tasted, or just smelt (which would have been enough), the wine to suddenly realise it was badly off, I do not know.

TCA is much more commonly picked up on the nose. It was blatantly obvious to someone with minor training. Even without, one bottle would have smelt different to the rest. Enough of a sign to question it.

I suppose what annoys me most about these situations is the huge chasm between what's advertised and what's delivered.

Have sent back a few in my time. Corked whites are the worst in that just a little TCA just makes the wine very dull and takes out the fruit and good characters.

It’s fun sending back bottles of €200 Sassicaia because they are corked. Have sent back 3 in my time (not at the same place however). Good restaurants should never complain about it.

Silly one day “I’m a trained sommelier you know”’s sometimes will argue with you. That’s even more fun.

I do have to stop collecting gins. I now have about 10 different ones at home
We have quite a collection but it's nice being able to choose the one that suits your mood .
