The view from my "office"

Yes, one of the newer (i.e. 25 years' old) folding types - not the old galvanised iron jobbies, that could support at last six kids hanging off it, being spun at what seemed like near supersonic speeds
One example of where new does not beat old!

The galv. ones were the most fantastic devices ever made. Not only could they keep kids entertained for hours, but the galv peg basket was the most wonderful invention for knocking out baby teeth of the newly active brigade, rivaled only by the equally fabulous totem tennis (whose hard plastic ball was akin to a flying house brick). More over, and hard to comprehend, but a pleasing sideline of the ol' Hills Hoist, was that they also dried clothes!

Absolutely bloody marvelous! :D

I am crying with laughter at that post ! I SO REMEMBER all that !! :D:D:eek::eek:

We have a genuine galvanised 36 year old Hills Hoist.
It was supplied and installed by the builder.
It still functions correctly , ie it assists drying clothes…….
Maybe one day I may oil the works.. but one should not rush such serious intervention

Oil. Oil! Don't be too hasty. I think a thin smear grease on the upper cog is all that's needed!

You can assist clothes to dry by draping them over the hedge in the back yard. A Hills Hoist has far more demanding tasks!

Do you want to sell it?? :)

nope…. what would replace it ?…some cheap new cough designed to be replaced every 2 years (like our toaster)

leads to......swmbo was quite determined that our toaster could /should be repaired (ie have a new element)…

.. did not/could not happen...we have new toaster

the old toaster is now lined up along with the previous toaster out in the garage …….hoping for a miracle

It was worth a try. I won't even mention that 19 years ago I took one to the tip. :( Who knows what I was thinking.

I fell off one when I was four when I was swinging around. I can still remember it vividly. I fell on to the handle. So much blood. I refuse to have one anymore and haven’t for the last 40 years.

I'm going there next year, can't wait.
Are you writing a trip report?

Every time I travel I want to write a trip report, but then nothing comes of it. The main hurdle is having to use my iPhone. I can’t type fast enough and that is frustrating. The last few trips I have posted snippets in this thread as a surrogate.

Today we took a trip out to Plentzia a pleasant little seaside town on a river mouth. It was at the end of the Metro about 25K north of Bilbao. The trip took about 55-55 minutes and over 3/4 of the trip was above ground so there was lots to see. It cost about A$2.30 each way. From the station there is about a 2K walk to the bay via a lovely tree lined promenade. It is a place that would obviously be packed out in summer and was busy today.

For lovers of wine this is also the place with the first underseas wine cellar -http://www.underwaterwine.com/visit-us.html

When you are on the Metro in Bilbao you must not sit if con-joined triplets board the train.

View from the dining room of the Radisson Blue Polar Hotel in Longyearbyen at breakfast today.

The bathroom has a slightly unpleasant smell to it. I think it may have something to do with this somewhat unusual plumbing arrangement. No S-bend under the sink, lower pipe from left comes from bath/shower.

We (I and son) spent the day exploring Longyearbyen. It started off very cloudy, but later the sun came out. Unfortunately the clouds have now returned, so no chance of seeing the Northern Lights tonight.

The sun comes out and shines on the mountains across the river.

The light on the mountains reflects in the windows of the town buildings.

And the mountains reflect in the river between sheets of ice.

I can highly recommend spending the time. I’ve written a few and yes it is a time consuming thing to do but it’s a diary for me to read later on - thoughts, little incidences that you forget about etc than stay online to read - whenever.
