The VA site is irritating me. There aren’t any filters (eg business reward only, or SQ only). Plus multi-city doesn’t seem to work for points searches, which for HBA-dwellers is often the only way to avoid insane transits.

Are there any third party sites or tips for targeted searching?

You can use the United website to search for VA award availability. The United website has its own quirks and challenges, but there are filters and you can see an overview of availability across a whole month in one screen.

What's available through United should also be available as a Velocity reward seat.

Is that only for flights operated by United or all VA’s airline partners? Most of my trips are in and out of Italy or SE Asia.

Oh, my answer was referring specifically to seats on VA metal. Sorry, I should have made that clearer.

For SQ flights, you can use the SQ website and look for Saver award seats. Confirmable (i.e. not waitlisted) Saver awards in Y, PE and J should also be available as Velocity rewards.

For Etihad, I usually go straight to the EY website and look for GuestSeat availability.

These methods allow you to look at award seat pricing on those airlines’ metal a week at a time. But they are only really an efficient way of searching for Velocity availability if you are familiar with the number of miles normally charged by SQ for Saver awards and by EY for GuestSeat redemptions.

I agree, this is a feature Virgin needs to work on.

I recently booked VA awards on SQ metal at took the approach @Mattg referred to above. However not all SQ flights can be booked via VA, which is frustrating. However the Velocity -> Krisflyer transfers are instantaneous, so you can make the transfer and book directly with SQ if required. It's a bit more expensive that way.

Just wanted to post I’m having the same problem… can’t filter any business availability like I used to. I’m looking for SQ or Qatar J seats to/from Europe and it’s impossible to search the VA website
