Ok, so Qantas has dropped its double status credit promotion for 2024. I need 130 status credits before end April to make gold.

Best I have been able to work out is Saturday departure CNS - PER (via MEL) $424 - 35 status credits x2 (70) return for $437 (via BNE) - 35 status credits x2 (70) Total 140 status credits for $861 - but this requires an overnight stay, so more money .

Better option is a Sunday departure, arrive in PER at 1900 and depart 2235, arrive CNS the next morning, so no hotel required for a total about $919, with the added benefit of not having to go to work lol.

I don't think I have any international flights in the next year, so do I need gold status or should I just buy Qantas club for $600

Any thoughts?

Do you need to go to Perth from Cairns?

Cairns to Sydney might be cheaper and can be done in a day.

I live in CNS. Need to depart and return there :)

Also CNS - SYD return doesn't deliver the required status credits

SC earn is based on
distance zones
  • (0 to 750 miles)
  • (751 to 1,500 miles)
  • (1,501 miles and over)
and fare type
  • Discount Economy,
  • Economy,
  • Flexible Economy
QF table here https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/earn-points/airline-earning-tables/qantas-and-jetstar-earning-tables.html?int_cam=au:airline-earning-tables:article:qantas-and-jetstar-earning-tables:en:nn

Just going a very long distance does not get extra SC. Mid range flights (751 to 1500) or just over 1501 miles can give a reasonable SC per $
CNS-BNE 862, so over the 750, earns the same as CNS-SYD and CNS-MEL (if same fare class)

JQ with max (=flex economy) can be good earners. But no double SC

Look at things like CNS-BNE-MEL as possible alternatives.

Only you can decide the value to attain or retain gold vs the cost of the SC's - everyone has a different value proposition.

Ok, so playing around with fare classes, I can go CNS - BNE red-edeal for $205 15 SC (30) return couple hours later business for $591 60 SC (120), so 150 SC. Mission achieved in only half a day less than $800. This seems the best option.

Totally agree. I'm just putting it out there for other peoples opinions. There are more benefits to being Gold than just having Qantas Club. I may or may not ever realise those benefits. Time will tell

Where is the sweet spot for $cost per point?
We are yet to see this for QF but for reference, I took advantage of VA's sale to QLD destinations combined with their SC bonus offer, and ended up getting under $3/SC. You probably need to really optimise the QF offering to get to $4 and I hope the smart ones around us will produce a few suggestions for us soon.
