Apart from being an avid AFF reader and occasional poster, I am also a somewhat serious mountain biker. Why does this have me starting a thread I hear you ask, well...
A few weeks ago I raced in the Jetblack Sydney 12 hour as a solo rider to try and score and entry to the Croc Trophy- Crocodile Trophy MTB Stage Race Australia. After 12 hours of riding, I managed to finish the top of the pile of people wanting the entry and so I got $2600 worth of entry free, yay! So after going through 12 hours of pain, I'm now lucky enough to be able to go through 10 days and 1200km of pain in the heat in Cairns!
So this means I'll be heading up to Cairns in October, which many of you know is a nice little hub for JASA earners. I've been doing a little bit of looking around and can see that a trip or two across to Darwin from Townsville is a good way to pick up some Status Credits, but I thought I might throw things open to the brains trust to see if anyone has some suggestions for a nice itinerary.
At this stage I'm planing on flying up to Cairns on Saturday the 15th of October, so I have a few days to acclimatize to the heat before the race starts on the 18th. The race finishes on the 27th and I'm planing on hanging around Cairns till the 30th, so I can check out the Great Barrier reef.
Now this is where it get's interesting. I have 180K in QFF points to play with and don't mind paying taxes on JASA flights. I'd like to take advantage of the great earn rates while up north and would also be happy to fly into Cairns in a convoluted way to pick up more status credits.
I was initially thinking of just buying an economy return ticket to Cairns to get up there and then doing a status run or two either before the race or after. I'm happy to acclimatize in Darwin or Townsville before the race or take a few days after the 30th to fly around the country.
So now to throw it out there, what long convoluted journeys can people dream up that would bag me lots of SC's for not many QFF points whilst I'm up in that neck of the woods? Similarly, getting to and from Cairns from Sydney, has anyone got any wonderful ideas?
