Tokyo Haneda slot - how will Virgin Operate it?

Yeh and I’m betting the perception of both quality and safety on the route is favours QF as well (which could even flow through to corporate policies) not to mention loyalty programs, as Mahubay Miles doesn’t exactly have a plethora of international partners so isn’t very appealing for Australian originating traffic.
At the AU P.O.S, I'd agree. Mixed outcomes on the PH P.O.S, even though PR and QF get an equal amount of complaints, many on the PH end will still take PR (offering of the 3-class A330s and the 2-class A321neos across many routes, offering J flatbeds on both aircraft) despite QF holding its own on the PH P.O.S

Absolutely the perception of quality and safety would be ore favourable to QF and yes PR’s FFP is terrible and would put a lot of people off.
Personally I think their product is miles ahead of QF’s but each to their own and PR are doing well enough to run daily’s from MNL to BNE, SYD and MEL with PER soon to be added

SYD and MEL also has 5J (ULCC) on the route, which has 400 seater A330neos.

SYD/MEL to MNL are heavy VFR routes with PR and QF offering the J cabins for the high yield market/FF redemptions (I'd be tipping many would be using MNL for FF redemption runs in the same way as BKK, CGK and DPS).

Yes, and for the higher yield market, at least out of MEL, I suspect SQ and pre-covid, CX were both competitors to QF's service via SYD, even with the backtracking.

PR flies the Standard A321neo with J flatbeds on the MNL-BNE year round and sometimes on MNL-SYD during quiet periods (mixed with the 3 class A330s (J/W/Y) that ply MNL-SYD)
PR's A321Ns also only have 168 seats (12/156).

More delays for the MAX production line announced this week, this looks like it might be very tight in terms of going ahead at launch.

Yeah they're cutting it fine, I was reading an article stating that it could be delayed. There is also something from the Guardian, which seems to think some airline deliveries might be pushed back - "The company (Boeing) said a “significant” number of 737 Max deliveries would be delayed because a supplier, Spirit AeroSystems, had made a component using a “non-standard” manufacturing process" - Guardian.

I have heard VA are preparing to use the legacy 2-class 737-700 (VH-VBY and VBZ) as 'backup' for the CNS-HND service if Boeing aren't able to deliver the 737-8 MAX in time due to the ongoing Boeing delays in general.

Would the 737-700 have the range?

-700s are old and ratty, pretty poor look for a flagship Haneda service.

The last time I flew VBZ she wasn’t in great form inside. They don’t even have the basics like power and USB.

Supposed to fly up in early July, not gonna be a fun ride on an NG. Hopefully VA manage to secure their one frame…

I recall the PM flew in his -700 from Canberra direct to Toyko.

The RAAF 737 is a BBJ, it is not a -700. It has the fuselage of the -700 but the wings of the -800. It is built for low payload and long range.

Apples and Oranges.

Would the 737-700 have the range?

Can it physically get there? Yes.

Can it legally get there with the required fuel reserves? From my numbers (using some flight planning software), not with more than about 30 pax

The actual company numbers by VA might make it more feasible but it would definitely be load restricted and I think would be a stop gap to losing the slot, rather than an ongoing solution. I would have thought an -800 with a fuel stop in Guam would be better.

Interesting. Hopefully it arrives on time. Not sure if there is a specific date they must commence flights as agreed by IASC. If delayed, maybe customers can be moved to ANA flights.
