I am considering purchasing top-up points but would like more information how it works. I know I have to ring the FF number to purchase them, but what happens after that? And will I incur a 2,500 points fee for ringing them?

Thank you! :)

Apple Pie,

Welcome to AFF.

Never having purchased points I cannot be emphatic but for literally everything else where you must ring the service centre there is no charge involved. Personally I would ring and ask them as there is never a charge until you actually make a transaction.

I'm confident that there won't be a 2,500 point fee to top your points up. here are the T's & C's. No mention of fees.

19. Top-up Points

19.1 If Members do not have sufficient Points to redeem a particular Award Flight, they may purchase additional Points towards that Award Flight at the rates specified by Qantas, subject to the following:
(a) the purchased Points may only be credited to that Member's account;
(b) the Points may be purchased only to redeem a specific Award Flight;
(c) each purchase must be for a minimum of 500 Points and a maximum of 20,000 Points, and in such blocks of Points as Qantas may specify;
(d) the number of Points purchased must not exceed 15% of the number of Points required for that Award Flight, rounded up to the closest multiple of 500 points;
(e) each Member may purchase additional Points only once in each twelve consecutive month period; and
(f) once Points have been purchased, they cannot be refunded.
19.2 The purchase of additional Points does not guarantee the availability of an Award Flight.
19.3 Points do not have a monetary value and cannot be converted to money. They cannot be sold, transferred or exchanged other than in accordance with these Terms and Conditions. The prices for additional Points do not represent a monetary value for Points.

You do not have to ring the FF call centre..you can purchase topup points on the QF website. I have done this myself on a couple of occasions.

Edited to add: you certainly USED to be able to buy topup points on the website, but it appears the capability has been removed; more "progress", it seems...

You still can buy top-up points via the website. If you're under the amount of points you need, you choose your award flight, then on the next page it has a warning at the top telling you that you don't have enough points then underneath there is a box that has the ability to top up your points.. Done

These two answers explain why I had troubles with this yesterday. I believed that you could top-up via the web but when I went in there all I got was the info to ring the Qantas so that is what I put down. I'm glad the online option is still available. :D

Oh, i forgot to add. I think you have to be in that 15% window for that top-up option to be available ;)

Ah, so it's just the detailed mechanism that has changed..you used to be able to get the points without specific reference to any flight.

Yea its probably to better adhere to point 19.1(b) in post #3 above

On reflection, it is probably more to do with limiting you to one use per 12 months.

For example, if you had 85K points and you wanted 2 award flights at 50K points each, you used to be able to pretend that you wanted an award for 100K points, purchase 15K points, and then get your 2 awards. Under the new system, that possibility seems to have been eliminated; you would be only be able to get one award.

Another related question, does anyone know how much the top up points cost?

Looks like I'll have to ring up as I'm trying for an award flight that and I'm short by an amount of points that fits the criteria (<20000 and <15%) but I don't get the option to top up.

It also seems to me that 19.1b contradicts 19.2. If you can only purchase for a specific award, then you must have found an available award that you are buying the points in the process of booking the award. So how can the award not be guaranteed? :confused:

I also guess that 19.1 b means that if you ring up to buy the points then you need to book a specific award and hence they might what a booking fee.

Any classic award is usually available as a ASA which you can top up effectively by using points and cash, and its not limited to once every 12 months.

What a great line!

"The prices for additional points do not represent a monetary value for points"

:mrgreen::mrgreen:

Where else would you see that claim? "The price does not represent a monetary value"!

Can I pay in Conch shells then? Goats? Beads?
