Had a recent Priority Club special for $95/night and I could not resist as I have never been to Townsville other than transit on the milk run.

Now to book the flights. I need BNE-TSV on Friday afternoon 18/11/2011 and TSV-BNE on Sunday evening 20/11/2011. For the regulars on these routes am I going to get better than the current QF $129 special each way?

I know VA has flights on Friday morning and Sunday morning for $99 each way but they are not suitable and the afternoon/evening flights are $145+.

John, $129 with qf is the lowest we've had for quite some time on sale. can be $169-$189 for usual low sale price.
enjoy townsville, bring the sun screen. i will be just returned from o/s and not in tsv. or else would offer to show you around. cheers :)

I am quite impressed by Townsville. I don't know what it is but Townsville looks and feels nothing like other Queensland towns I have lived in and visited in the past 4 years. Perhaps it is the lack of ugly Queenslander homes but I like it.

How did you go at Magnetic Island?

Is it worth spending time there? This trip was all about getting away from Brisbane and playing golf but I would like to visit Townsville again and possibly Magnetic Island.

John, Maggie Isl. although it has become more comercial over the yrs., still retains its charm. curlews walking around crying out their haunting sound, more and more 'upmarket' accommodation and homes springing up but all in all still retains some of the charm of maggie isle of old. some beaut areas. i've heard from those who have gone to the greek isl., maggie can compare most favourably. very subjective remarks, just like movie critics of a film which i take with grain of salt. but maggie does have charm of its own.
having lived in tsv. 40 yrs., 21st century has caught up here and less and less of the charm of yesteryear. but the weather, riverwalks and sea continue to provide charm. glad you enjoyed your time here.

Definitely get to Magnetic Is if you get the chance, as others have mentioned it is becoming commercilaised, but still a very plesant trip with some great walks and beaches.

$129 is the cheapest you will see it on QF.

$169 to $189 is the normal price but it does rise a bit on Fridays to low $200's

My weekend in Townsville draws to a close.

Thoroughly enjoyed the visit although the lack of street signs drives me nuts. Magnetic Island will have to wait for next time.

The lack of street signs in NQ is partly due to Cyclone Yasi as many signs where blown over and damaged.

Didn't see this post until now. I'm in PER QP on my way to TSV for a poke around. How many members do we have in TSV? I'm up for a beer or 3 Mon and Tues nights. Staying at the Holiday Inn. Not at JohnK's rates though :-(

Don't know whether Jamaica Joe's is still there on the waterfront but it's a great place to go for drinks & overlooks Magnetic Island.

Also stayed at the Mantra One on Magnetic Island which is extremely nice but Mantra don't participate in any frequent hotel program.

Magnetic Island was absolutely stunning. We stayed at the Peppers Blue which was very nice indeed. Good location at the ferry terminal. The restaurant wasn't cheap but the food was nice. Friends who had been there 10 years ago warned me that it was a backpacker island with a lot of "weird people" wandering around but it has definitely changed a lot. Once I get through the hundreds of pictures we took I'll try to do some sort of TR.

edit: was able to get some pics of SWMBO's facebook
