Hi,

I was hoping the gurus on this website may be able to provide some information on whether the Transfer Counter at the Singapore Airport can be used when arriving on a Jetstar flight and departing on a Singapore Airlines flight. I assumed it would be OK, but my son who is doing the travel, has called SQ in Aust and Singapore and has been told he has do immigration/baggage collection/re-check in with bags. I know you people have all the answers so would appreciate if someone can advise if the info we have been given is in fact correct.

Thanks :)

Jetstar, much like other low cost carriers, is point to point, so they generally don’t do transfers, you have to completely finish your journey before starting a new one.

Timely question as I'll be doing a similar thing in 2 weeks - arriving on 3K from HKG into SIN then transiting overnight before leaving on QF in the morning. If I use OLCI can I get my boarding pass at the transit desk?

Re: Transfer Counter Changi Airport - Can it be used for Jetstar to Singapore Airline

Further to above post I asked JQ DRW (Skystar Ground Handling) re transferring bags to a QF flight & they gave me a list of other airlines they interline bags with. These other airlines do not have to be in the same pnr as the JQ flights but obviously minimum connecting times would need to be observed at the transfer point which in the above case is SIN.

(AC) Air Canada
(AF) Air France
(AY) Finnair
(BA) British Airways
(EK) Emirates Airlines
(EY) Etihad Airlines
(FJ) Air Pacific
(JL) Japan Airlines
(KL) KLM
(LH) Lufthansa
(PX) Air Niugini
(QF) Qantas
(QR) Qatar Airways
(RJ) Royal Jordanian
(SB) Air Calin
(TN) Air Tahiti Nui

JQ don't have an interline baggage agreement agreement so one JQ won't be able to through check bags to SQ or vv. I take it that your son will have checked luggage?

What flight numbers & destination is your son travelling to/from? Once you have these details we can find out what terminals he'll be arriving and departing from in SIN.

I believe SQ operate from T2 in SIN so if arriving at T1 on Jetstar you can make your way airside between the two terminals physically without having to clear customs, however I think the question that really needs asking is:

Can you arrive in SIN ex Jetstar with your bag only tagged to SIN but make your way to the transit counter at T2 get your SQ boarding pass then see if they can locate your bag & retag it behind the scenes to your SQ destination so you can remain airside & not have to clear customs and immigration etc???

He could maybe do OLCI for the SQ flight to minimise things he has to do in SIN.

It may seem like fanciful notion however I'm sure I remember someone telling me this scenario happened to them. Labour is a lot cheaper in SIN so they can afford to have heaps more staff whether it be in the baggage area or for aircraft cleaning etc.

PS the above list of carriers is for JQ not 3K and applies to flying internationally out of Australia. JQ don't interline to other carriers or even themselves within Oz.

Hi OzBeachBabe,

Thanks for your reply and you summed it up perfectly -

Nice to see you are from Darwin, I am from Darwin too :)

He will be arriving on JQ 57 (DRW to SIN) 24 Sep arriving SIN T1
Departing SQ 968 T2.

Thanks again with your help, and also thanks to samh004.

I am pretty sure after reading all this that he will have clear customs and collect his bags then re-check in, but the idea of doing OLCI is a good one, thanks.

In all honesty there is not much difference between transit and going through immigration at SIN, they are very efficient so the whole process should not take too long. You still have to change terminals, do an OLCI and bagdrop as mentioned and it should be quick.

According to the Changi Airport website Jetstar International have check in counter at transfer lounge C Terminal 1.
I was wondering the same as im flying in the reverse to Singapore with MAS and transfering to JQ 58. Just wonder if i could pick a BP for the flight as i have carry on only.:)

Singapore Airlines transfer lounge E or F, Terminal 2. I would try and keep your bag tags.

+1, the most for immigration at T1 would be perhaps 5 or 10mins if extremely unlucky, and going back in at T2 or 3 should be 2 or 3 mins. After collecting luggage, its out into the main area up a level to departures and on to the sky train to T2 where he can checkin at SQ. My estimate that the whole process will take somewhere between 5 and 20 mins longer than just transitting (main variable being time for luggage to come out). Of course no need if no checked luggage.

Is there any local departure taxes payable ex SIN (besides the ones already included on your SQ ticket) that you would need to pay because having entered SIN, albeit for a very short time, you then have to depart the country?

It may not be applicable now but once upon a time in HKG you could clear customs and spend the day in HKG before departing that day and you wouldn't be charged the local departure tax.

I have used the transfer desk for Jetstar (JQ) flights both to transfer to onward flights on TG and also to transfer onto Australian bound JQ flights. The flights on TG were with checked baggage, the ones to Australia were with carry-on only. As the JQ flights are code shared with QANTAS they need to offer these services.

If in the country <24 hrs local taxes do not apply (I have entered Singapore a number of times on connecting flights without any issues). In any event if on separate tickets the OP's son would have paid local taxes already, as far as the airline concerned it is a fresh booking from Singapore and therefore is liable for such taxes.
