Hi,

This June I’m flying QF SYD to MEL in J and connecting with a JQ to BKK in *Class. These flights are on different PNR’s.

Will I be able to check my bags all the way through to BBK? And how much time should i allow to transfer between the MEL Qantas Domestic & the International Terminals?

Thanks in advance

Check-in at the Premium service desk at SYD, then ask them to add the JQ international flight. This will enable them to tag the bags through. Or easier, give qantas a call now, get them to add a 'ghost' or information sector about the JQ flight to your QF domestic service..
You will need to be at JQ check-in before their 1hour cut off, as QF wont be able to check you in for the JQ flight.

I called Qantas platinum desk last week to enquire about linking 2 PNRs (QF Y and JQ *class bookings). The guy was adamant that it was impossible. I might try another agent.

It is impossible to link them. Although ask to add a ghost or information sector in the booking or something similar (not too sure what they call it, i think it's a GK segment)

Interesting.

Last November we flew MEL-SYD on QF then SYD-HNL on JQ *class. The International connections desk in MEL checked our bags all the way through and gave us boarding passes for both flights. It all seemed to work OK.

That's for bookings done on the same booking though.

For bookings made on a stand-alone basis, JQ's booking system does not produce an Amadeus booking code and then not associated with a GDS.
If a booking is booked in conjuction with an airlines GDS then the first check-in system would send a message to the other reservations system via the GDS message. (hope that made some sense)

I've seen it happen successfully where pax had one pnr BNE/SYD on QF & a separate JQ itinerary pnr booked direct with JQ SYD/DPS.
JQ flights were added in at checkin as 'add itinerary' function then bag tags generated BNE/SYD/DPS and all boarding passes issued.

I've also seen where pax were going BNE QF MEL JQ SIN whereupon the MEL/SIN flight was booked as QFxx_ a codeshare flight in the same pnr as BNE/MEL yet because of some glitch in the system (whose I don't know) the bags could not be through checked to SIN.

Other times BNE QF x/CNS JQ NRT in one pnr bags through checked & both boarding passes issued for one pax yet identical itinerary for someone else but although bags through checked to NRT bag only QF boarding pass issued for BNE/CNS.

I would allow enough time so you would comfortably be able to collect your bags in MEL ex QF & recheck with JQ just in case you had to. A good idea is take the SYD/MEL flight before the one you're currently on in case of flight delays or cancellations.

A res agents (even Premium Desk) version of things vs what actually happens at an airport are like chalk and cheese most of the time. I wouldn't even bother trying to do it through res just do it at the airport ie tell the checkin agent you would like your bags checked all the way through to xx_ & have your itinerary with you. It matters not whether or not you were able to give QF the JQ details prior to arriving at the airport.

In fact it's probably worse getting res to mess with it as even if it's in QF pnr as a passive segment, sometimes if they try and do it at checkin it could cause a dupe booking on the international sector which gets messy if you try to cancel the dupe sector and accidentally cancel the live one also.

I was speaking to a very cluey person recently who gave similar advice. After doing some digging around, it is policy:

Jetstar International Flights

Full bag connectivity and passenger check-in.

QF International to JQ International v.v.
QF Domestic to JQ International v.v.

Baggage connectivity and passenger through check-in is available for customers connecting from/to Qantas domestic and international flights to/from Jetstar international flights. Passengers will receive boarding passes for both sectors at commencement of journey. This is available for both JQ marketed and QF codeshare customers.

Examples:
LHR (QF) SIN (QF*JQ^) DRW (QF*JQ^) CNS or
LHR (QF) SIN (JQ) DRW (JQ) CNS

Customers connecting from Qantas operated London Singapore flight to Jetstar's Singapore Darwin Cairns flights, will have their bags through checked and boarding passes provided for the whole journey.

CHC (JQ) SYD (QF) SIN

Customers connecting from Jetstar operated Christchurch - Sydney flight to Qantas operated Sydney - Singapore flight will have their bags through checked and boarding passes provided for the whole journey.

CBR (QF) SYD (JQ) SGN

Customers connecting from Qantas domestic flights to Jetstar operated International flights will have their bags through checked and boarding passes provided for the whole journey.

No it was not.

These were totally separate. Y on QF and J on JQ.

I am flying J QF401 SYD- MEL then *class on JQ7 MEL-SIN then F on QF 031 SIN-LHR. I wonder if my bags can be through checked? Seems like I might confuse them.

Thank you all for your help.

I'm going to change to an earlier Syd-Mel, a 90 min transfer time is cutting it too fine, especially if it turns out (worse case scenario) I have to collect my bags, change terminals and re-check myself in.

Now that I think of it, back in '09 I flew LGW-MAD-BIO on 2 separate bookings (BA & Iberia) and BA happily checked my baggage all the way through to BIO.

Though the difference being that unlike JQ, BA & Iberia are on Amadeus.

Mrs Pyffii and Family are travelling Melbourne/Brisbane-Sydney Qantas Y and connecting onto JQ3 *class to Honolulu ( on different PNR's )..Just got off the phone from the Premium Desk who contacted Airport Domestic check who confirmed that it is not possible to check luggage through to Honolulu as not on the same itinerary...Does anyone have any current experience as to whether our luggage can be checked through ?...Appreciate any help...Thanks in advance

Have never had a problem doing this going Adl/Mel on QFd and Mel/Bkk on JQi but I do it this way. Call the WP desk and ask for the JQi flight to be linked / noted on your QFd booking. Then when you check in with QFd, ask for the bags to be checked through to Hnl.

Thanks gowatson for the confirmation...Have "linked" the bookings so hopefully I can get our bags checked through to HNL successfully:cool:

Enjoy the holiday and do share how it went. BTW do hope you get to guest the family into the Syd QF F lounge.

Slightly off topic but maybe relevant.

I recently flew JQ *class MEL-BKK connecting to AY J BKK-HEL-FCO. Completely separate PNR's so I expected to have to collect in BKK, clear customs and immi and recheck. When checking in at the JQ check-in in MEL they asked where we were going after BKK (as MEL-BKK was booked as a one-way and you must show evidence of a return or onward flight) and when I showed them the itin for the AY flight said they could check the bags all the way through. I was a bit worried they wouldn't make it but sure enough they were there on the carousel at FCO when we finally arrived. Pleasantly surprised all round!

Cheers

Timmi
