Hi,

My Wife has her points and status pooled to me as she has to fly qantas for work while I fly virgin for work and personal trips. We have a trip coming up where we are on seperate bookings flying from seperate ports. She has a flexi fare booked and wants to upgrade to J class but is just short on the points balance required. Does anyone know if I can transfer some of mine to her without transferring all of them?

Finally how do you all check to see if a J class reward is available prior to booking. I booked a flight for this weekend and prior to booking did a dummy booking for a reward seat using points and there were J class seats available, another dummy booking showed there were 4 seats in J available. After I made the booking it said there were no seats available. I called Velocity and they said there were no reward upgrades available and to check in the lounge at checkin. If there were seats stil available they would approve my upgrade them.

Thanks in advance.

Can't speak for the second point but you can transfer points over (min 5000) to your wife, even if she has pooling to yourself active at the same time.

Yes you can transfer points to your wife so she can upgrade, I also believe you can use your points to upgrade on her behalf

There will be J seats available for purchase just not reward seats, upgrades use the same bucket as reward seats. I've tried to upgrade before only to be told there was nothing available, even asked in lounge and nothing available, get on board and J cabin was completely empty which makes no sense to me. And this is as VA WP

I do my dummy bookings with the "points plus pay" box checked, as it illustrates any reward seats available for that flight. If you have already made a booking, keep checking right up until you have to leave the house, as they can sometimes pop up out of nowhere. Then, you just call and request the upgrade.

Happy flying

Also, a different way with the same result is you can also just do normal $$ booking and just switch between points or $$ when the flight options come up

Just remember different status can upgrade different routes. ie only Gold and Plat can upgrade long haul. I assume 1 of 2 things. Either your wife has no status as she pools to you or she does have status and pools surplus SC to you.. Either way it would be prudent to review this as you do not want to be buying flexi fares hoping to upgrade if you have no status. i will say if you hold status and travel on same flight you can upgrade both pax.( assuming 2 reward seats available ) However, this does not help as you have different PNR from different ports.. I am not sure you will be able to upgrade your wife ( due to different flights ) or your wife will be able to upgrade herself ( due to no status ).

You can just do dummy booking like normal and switch to " view in points " ( see post #5 ). If there are reward seats available you can upgrade immediately.

What is not clear is the "status" position and where you are flying from / to. Both these will impact how and if you can upgrade. I would also clarify these things first before transferring points between accounts for no reason.

EDIT : in bold

I read the OP as that he did so a dummy reward search but was told these were not available to upgrade-would be helpful to clarify as I understood that you should be able to upgrade if reward available. Obviously if he did a search for paid J that would be as expected

Yes I agree.. I suspect in the search conducted there were not 4 x J reward seats available
