Transiting thru LAX

Hi,
I am planning a trip to Melbourne. Before booking the flights I have a few questions about transiting in LAX.
I will be flying from Quebec, Canada (YQB) -Toronto (YYZ) -LAX .all with Air Canada and then switch LAX- Melbourne with Qantas. same on the way back.
My questions are:
1- Arriving in LAX from AC 793 at terminal 2, do i have to pass immigation / collect suitcase/ put my suitcase on the transit belt and pass custom ?
2- Does my suitcase be tag / check until my final destination ( Melbourne) or do i have to pick them up and check them again with Qantas as AC is star alliance and Qantas is One world and are probably not affiliate?
3- My connecting time in LAX is 3 hours. Is it enough to do all this and change terminal 2 to TBIT?

And same questions for the return flight to Quebec, Canada?

3 hrs is fine.

You do immigration in Canada. That's for arrivals, before you leave.

Yanks don't do exit immigration.

Pick your bag up and then checkin TBIT Interline not available.

let qantas know your arrival flight so they can keep an eye on things that can go wrong.

Thank you spruce for your reply. What do you mean by interline not available? sorry i am kinda new to this.
So I will pass Canadian immigration in Canada to exit but don't need to pass US immigration in LAX because i am transiting? right?

Normally arriving in the US via SFO, on the next trip we are going via LAX from Brisbane with Virgin.
What is the average transit time from International to Domestic - collecting and re-checking bags - in LAX

If you were one world all the way you could check luggage through. Air Canada are star alliance, qantas is one world.

US immigration is on departure in Canada, so nothing to do on arrival. You will leave before heading to USA arrivals in Canada.

That can be a lengthy process, allow some time

1- I've flown through Vancouver (YVR) to DFW and the process there is you do US immigration and customs as you transit through the airport from the Canada section to the US section. For transiting passengers at YVR customs identification consisted of you viewing your bag on a monitor and confirming it was yours; it then went onto the plane. I'm not sure if it's a similar process YYZ.
2- Arriving in LAX you will need to collect your suitcase and transfer to TBIT and check in. You can either catch the transfer bus that does a loop around the terminals or walk. From T2 to TBIT is a 5~10 min walk. As noted above your suitcase will only be tagged through to LAX so you will need to check in with your suitcase at the Qantas counter.
3- 3 hours in this instance should be ample time, as customs and immigration into the USA has already been done.

FYI - If you have access to the Qantas lounge, then after checking in at the Qantas counter go to the right hand side of the departure hall and go through security there. After you go through security you walk out and the elevator to the Qantas lounge is straight in front of you.

I don't know whether it's possible on AC, but for a UA domestic flight connecting to QF on the same booking, it's possible to check baggage all the way through.

For travel ex MEL to LAX on then connecting onto AC flights QF will only through check the bags if all the flights are in the same pnr so the procedure for your return flights to Canada (assuming same pnr) MEL QF x/LAX AC x/YYZ AC YQB would be that QF will tag your bags through to YQB.

You will however need to clear customs in LAX (makes no difference that you are transiting) then drop off your bag with AC & at the same time get your AC boarding passes for LAX/YYZ/YQB.

Not sure if AC can through check bags YQB to MEL but you would need to get your boarding pass from QF at LAX. I'm not sure when other posters have said your bags can't be through checked YQB/MEL whether they're talking about flights being on separate bookings or in the same pnr.
