Travel Insurance - AAMI?

We're taking a 5 week trip to the USA. I shopped around for travel insurance (incl QF/QBE, TravelInsurance.com.au, flightcentre, etc...) and by far the cheapest comes out from AAMI (who are my insurers for home etc..) - it's a[pprox $350 for the family compared with $490-800 from others.

I cannot see much difference between the policies in terms of coverage, limits, excess etc...

Has anyone else ever used AAMI travel insurance who can comment?

I used them for my last overseas trip. Problem is I've never claimed on travel insurance, so its hard to know how good or bad they are. In general I've claimed on my car insurance and home contents insurance with AAMI and found both experiences to be good.

An Annual Frequent Traveller policy from TID for those who travel overseas on a regular basis. Cover extends to your spouse or travel partner and any children or grandchildren travelling with you for the entire duration of the trip. (any any other trip you take for 12 months)

This is now $354 (up from $340) last year.

Interestingly a "Family" policy for a 5 week period is $398.

As discussed on a number of threads in the past, the multi trip annual option might be worth looking at as an option, it depends on your travel pattern? I have had the need to make a claim on such a QBE policy owing to a trip cancellation as part of the SARS outbreak and was very happy with the experience.

If you get the annual policy you may be able to claim part of the cost as a deduction on tax and negotiate for better car rental pricing using the excess/LDW cover they provide, obviously this has an effect on the overall affordability of the purchase, for the rest of the family the case may be different. The QBE annual policy for two adults and a child is $500 in total!

Have a look at webjet annual mutlitrip on their web page. I got it for a family for $300. had my company insurance agent look at the detail for me and he gave it the thumbs up. Covers you on private or company trips.

Having had AAMI car insurance for over 4 years with no claims, I had a good opinion of them. Their customer service was friendly and their insurance was cheaper than the others.

And then someone crashed into me and I realised how bad AAMI car insurance is in comparison to virtually all of the other car insurers in NSW. I was very lucky that the other car was insured with Allianz. I was able to submit a third party claim myself through Allianz and get the mess sorted. Never again would I insure with AAMI. It was a terrible experience and it was not my fault and the other driver agreed with me. I would hate to experience AAMI when it was my fault.
