So a colleague was traveling on his honeymoon overseas and his work laptop got stolen.
Some suggest the firms business insurance policy wont pay as he isn't on business and that if he has personal travel insurance it should cover it under 3rd party loss / damage.

I decided to check with my premium CC insurance policy.
The response i got was that there is no cover for "trade items, trade samples or your tools of trade or profession".
Haven't spoken to him so don't know if he has insurance or has been able to claim.

Anyone have thought / experience with this type of thing? Is it a reason to buy a better policy and not rely on free CC insurance. Anyone know a policy that covers work equipment.
Is it just a risk when travelling on holiday and taking your work laptop.

Likely that the company will have to foot the bill.

In most cases the 'free' CC insurance is equal or better than 'normal' paid policies. So if the CC insurance won't cover it, neither would the paid insurance. Unless you go for a specific work related policy.

ANZ platinum CC insurance has a similar exclusion (maybe that's the one your looking at?) - while it does reference a 'personal computer' (which might mean there is a distinction from a 'work' computer) - it would probably require an official determination. The definition of 'personal computer' doesn't appear to exclude a work laptop:

Personalcomputer:laptops, notebooks, tablet PCs, personaldigital assistants (PDA’s), smart phones, and any other hand-held wireless devicesthat have the capacity to convey data orinformation

It might be that a work laptop is considered 'personal' (just like a work issued phone might be, especially where you have used your work phone to replace your own phone)

It was ANZ / qbe that I asked.

It's an interesting point - one I hadn't thought of before. I have occasionally traveled with a work issued phone, I didn't stop to think it might not have been covered (but then again, I guess it would have ultimately been 'insured' by work so it wouldn't have been coming out of my pocket!)

Looking at TID;s PDS it has something similar to ANZ CC:

Luggage and Personal Effectsmeans any personal items owned by you andthat you take with you or buy on your tripand which are designed to be worn or carriedabout with you. This includes items of clothing, personal jewellery, photographic and videoequipment or personal computers, or electricaldevices or portable equipment. However, itdoes not mean any business samples or itemsthat you intend to trade.

It doesn't specifically exclude a work laptop, but it also leaves it wide open to exclude it at the same time.

Do you mean 'business travel insurance' policy? Or just business insurance?
I can't see how being anywhere is different to being at home on the evening or the weekend, which presumably would be covered.
If you've been given a laptop and authorised to take it out of the office, I would expect it to be insured everywhere you could possibly take it, or if not, then it's the employers responsibility to replace unless there's a policy that defines where you shouldn't take it.

I believe business travel insurance.
Business insurance would cover you in the country you work in but i dont think it extends to other countries.

Similar to regular insurance. You can take your items out of your home around the city and be covered but overseas you need travel insurance.

Most business insurance policy's would cover for loss in Australia only and most also require that to be under an extra portable property cover
