I need to bring my soon to be mother in law (shudder) to OZ from South Africa for a month. I have already booked and paid for her tickets with QF.

Next up is travel insurance. She is 52, no pre existing illnesses.

Any suggestions for travel insurance?

I'd say you'll need to purchase the policy in South Africa, as policies sold in Australia typically only cover Australian residents.

I want full cover. Travel, health, emergency, everything. The SA Consulate in Australia is notoriously unhelpful for RSA Citizens in strife in OZ.

Just googled "travel Insurance for South Africans"...

Company called TIC (Travel Insurance Consultants) offers "Leisure comprehensive - up to age 69" for R1420 for a month long trip..

Seems to include everything. Might be worth a look... I didn't search any further.. better options may exist of course.

Curious as to what folks expect consular officials to do... especially if talking of matters that are clearly personal responsibility/insurance type stuff... I know a lot of Aussies seem to think consulates overseas will intervene with local officials, pay for all sorts of things etc.. but I don't know WHY folks think that...:?:
