Hi All,

I travelled on DJ from ZQN-SYD and at the moment have lost a luggage. I have the plat charge card. Lets assume I won't get my luggage within the next 7 days, can I claim via amex plat charge insurance and also via Virgin Australia baggage? Sorry new to this never had to claim for a lost luggage before.

Also what is the best way to approach this with amex? I guess I need to wait 7 days before DJ declares it lost?

I am based in SYD.

Thanks,
K.

Big assumption. Most luggage turns up.

Assume you are covered under the new Amex Plat Policy. Was 100% of your trip charged to the card.
If so claim Amex, let them deal with Virgin.

Note the 100% rule and associated other changes saw me cancel my Plat Card today

Yes mine is under the new rule and I purchased my wife's ticket (she was travelling with me) using my primary card in full. For my ticket it was a free amex reserve flight (hopefully this is covered as well? )

I have a feeling someone has taken my luggage in SYD. My flight ends in SYD no transit.

Also have you claimed lost luggage before with AMEX? What if I don't have a receipt for the goods I have lost? Does that mean I can't claim?

I'm one of the rare few that have also been in this situation... and my bag never turned up. I can tell you that it was not an easy process to get the claim paid in full, but it eventually came through after a few threats of referring Amex to the FOS.

Firstly, you will not be able to claim with Amex 100%. The terms and conditions state that you must first exhuast all recourse with the airline. From memory, I'm pretty sure this comes under the Warsaw Convention where their liability is limited to $X. Once they have paid this, you will a) have acknowledgement from the airline that your bags were lost and never recovered, and b) have a small cheque from them which Amex will deduct off the total value of your claim. This is unless the airline wishes to prove that your bags were stolen at the carousel, in which case it would be a different type of claim (and one that would need to be reported to the police AS SOON AS that position became evident).

By the way, I was covered under the original policy, so didn't have any problems with proving that I was 'covered', it was more to do with the contents of my claim (it's not always easy proving ownership for every piece of clothing). It took 3+ months to get sorted. Also, I know I might be stating the obvious, but make sure you keep all your documents. This includes boarding passes, baggage receipts, correspondance with the airline, etc.

For Australian O/D international travel it's been the "Montreal Convention" rather than "Warsaw" for the last couple of years.

Claims against airlines are limited to 1000 "Special Drawing Rights" (XDR / SDR), a notional currency weighted against several other currencies.

Currently, ~1XDR=AUD1.47, so that's a maximum Airline payout of about $1,470 before you TI kicks in.

(The underwriter will generally assist you in making the claim against the airline first. Once upon a time, the underwriter would generally pay you out first, then make their own assessment whether to claim against the airline.)

Thanks guys for the info. Just to let you know they found my back the next morning and delivered it to my house at noon. So all good. Happy with the outcome. I asked them what happened they couldn't tell me...
