I use an Airport Express for that purpose and love it

Pros:
- Small with smooth edges, so it packs in my bag well

Cons:
- Only 10 connections. Okay for me but maybe not for three people with a bundle of things
- Can't configure it using a mobile device, so it needs to set up using a laptop. (This may change next week though!)

Thanks, Russ. 10 is going to be more than required. 2 iPads, 2 netbooks. I will have Engin phone which will need wired connection. I wonder if I should take one small 5-port switch. Could that be linked with the AirPort express?

+1 for the airport express. My regular hotels have a fixed cable connection, so it is worth it just for that...

I just bought this one.

Just program it in advance. If you don't it still works but sends out free wifi to everyone around.

Airport Express is very good. I have, however, switched to the Sapido 1602 for my travels. (Thanks NM for the advice :)) It is more compact and lighter. It can be powered via USB cable from a computer.

Sapido has since released a router that also has 3G capability too.

That worked. Danke.

Like a few others, I use an Airport Express, works great for me, though occasionally you get hotels that somehow work out multiple devices connect through wifi and it doesn’t work. Not sure why they do that.

I thought it was just me! I had that problem last week in NZ

That looks really good actually.

It does look good. I like the rechargeable battery. I can see me buying one on ebay after a couple of Chateau Dan Murphy's!!!!:)

To take in more revenue!

You may find this article interesting as it suggests ways to work around the hotel's controls:

Read the UPDATE towards the bottom part.

So, internet sharing through laptop may circumvent the restrictions.

This is what I do, very simple to set up and have never had a problem with it. Some others in our touring party took out the hotel's internet in Korea a few times by using the airport express. It gets around that multiple device thingy too. Internet sharing fools the connection in thinking only one item is attached :-)

Can anyone provide an update as to a decent non-apple portable wireless router? I have had a few issue trying to configure the airport with my non apple laptops and hodgepodge OSs at home. I note ASUS make a USB powered router, any thoughts?

I have an ASUS WL-330N3G. Absolutely love it. So tiny yet comes in handy so many ways when traveling. I have used a variety of devices and networks with it and haven't had any problems. As it is USB powered you can power it from a lithium battery pack. I purchase mine in Malaysia at the beginning of the year for about $60.

Thanks for all the replies.

Bought an ASUS WL-30N3G from Sin. Even before GST refund (if you spend >100 at same shop) it was only 65SGD, or about $51. With GST back should be only 48AUD!

Amazing price for such a handy device.

Does it contain a battery, or you need to power it using USB seperately?
