Since I am off to the US next week I thought I should get my cash card. After checking the rates at my bank and credit union I found the best rate at Travelex.

So off to my local Travelex and the rate on their board was six cents below the rate shown through the Qantas site. I told the clerk that the offered board rate was rubbish and that the Travelex rate on line was better.

To his credit he asked me to show him how to access the rate and once he saw it he said he would ring his boss to try and match it.

After a couple of minutes he was given an over ride code and was able to process the transaction.

All the time he kept apologising for the delay. Then he processed my QF points and it was all done.

It can be done if you know what the rate si and are prepared to ask and walk away if you don't get what is appropriate.

The same thing happened to me with Travelex and Euros, but I had actually paid before I noticed the discrepancy between the rate I was given and the web advertised rate. When I showed him the print-out he rang through and got the correct rate. I had the impression that I was the first customer that had queried the rate with him.

Charged me $30 to use a credit card though.

The Travelex online rate is nearly always better than the in-store rates.

Yep the online rate is always better than the standard walk-in rates, however stores have the ability to change the rate depending on how much you are looking to buy/sell
