One last thing about couchsurfing as well, there are many people who want to be involved with meeting people from around the world but don't have enough space to have you stay with them... In that case the site also allows members the option to put on their profile that they are willing to catch up with visitors for a drink or a meal...

So if visiting a city you can also look for people in that city who don't mind doing that, or some offer to take people for walking tours of their city which they like to show off etc... I haven't ever used travel chums which the basis looks good, but couchsurfing is a good way to meet the locals rather than just tag along with another visitor...
