I have been trying to book some DJ flights online for over a week now ie before the QF grounding and every time I have gotten this message

ERROR
- An error has occurred. Please try again. If the error persists, please contact the Airline.

Anyone else had troubles online of late? I am on a Mac using Chrome, but changing browsers doesn't seem to help

I only get an error on the Dj booking engine on my Mac if I try and pay through their direct debit engine - Polci or something.
It won't work on Safari, Opera, Chrome, or Firefox on my Mac.
Is that where you are getting stuck?

No, I'm not getting to the payment screen. I get pass the first page where you select flights, then on the second page where you enter your velocity number, have the option to buy carbon credits and hire car. When I click next on that page, I get the error.

Hmm

Is there another computer you can try? Not sure if DJ would accept the "It won't work on my computer" reason to not charge extra to book through the call centre - love to be proved wrong though.

I have now booked on another comp. That's a bit sneaky telling me to contact them, if they are only to surcharge me then. Any way to bring this to DJ's attention, without a fee? Would prefer to be able to make bookings from my primary machine.

If its an issue at their end, they wouldn't you overcharge you. Since it looks like it is an issue from your end, (have you tried deleting your cache and cookies ?)
