I have a meeting in Seoul in July and would like to fly from Melbourne with Qantas as it will give me double points due to WP status. When I go into the Qantas website the fare is over $6000 and in any case uses Asiana between Sydney and Seoul but with a QF number.

However if I price the flights separately:

Qantas Melbourne to Sydney, return $224
Asiana Sydney to Seoul, return $1660

a difference of over $4000. Asking the impossible here but is there any way around this dilemma-fly Asiana from Sydney to Seoul but with QF number so I get the double points.

I can fly CX for about $1880 but then I'd get only single Qantas points

Grateful for any ideas (except those telling me to be satisfied with single points)

Can you book the Asiana flights with Asiana but with a QF flight number?

I just booked BA009 on Qantas site, but as QF302 - (I booked a Redemption Ticket for my partner, but only BA flights were available, hence I had to also book BA.)

From memory this gets me all the benefits of QF - but others may correct me, been a while since I flew a QF codeshare flight with another carrier.

Have you talked to a travel agent, less travelled routes are often poorly priced online by comparison. You might also like to look at a One World Product such as the circle asia product which should be lower than 6K and give you some extra options for the odd diversion:

The other option is to do a one way to Korea, then get to TPE and grab a J return back home for around $2500 with a return leg that must be used within 6 months.

Qantas website will give you a $1693 MEL-Seoul fare on that Asiana flight with QF number - HOWEVER you have to depart before the 26th June (as far as I can tell...). Possibly relating to school holidays and peak seasons? Alternatively they may not have loaded cheaper fares for those dates yet - ie the sale fare may only go to the 26th June.

A quick search SYD-Seoul shows the same pattern - on the QF site. $2000 increase in fare each way after the 26th June!

You could get Mel-Japan for 1600 on QF, with regular JAL flights from HND/NRT to both Incheon and Gimpo. There doesn't seem to be any increase in Japan fares over July. I guess it depends on how much choice in dates you have... You could also book QF via HKG or other Asian ports.

Book them as two separate tickets, but then get QF to link the bookings.

No QFF points or SC's are earned for travel on the Asiana (OZ) Flight number.

This is not in line with the OP's aim.

On the QF website, I can find return flights SYD-ICN in July (QF flight number, on Asiana metal) for about $2,700 in economy.

Thanks guys. All helpful. Thinking of flying JQ *class to Sin or Kul then getting an el cheapo (like Air Asia or China Eastern) to ICN. Not an ideal itinerarybut probably the best mileage haul .Assuming the cheapest fare in China eastern will not qualify for QF miles
