It's been a long time since I travelled having retired some 16 months ago and I've kinda lost touch with a couple of things. I've got an upcoming trip to Melbourne and was wondering how much a cab would be from Tullamarine to Spencer Street station in the city. Someone must have done that trip in the past week.

Thanks in advance
JB

I have actually been taking the skybus lately... they run every 5 mins and are something like 15$ and I have found them fairly comfortable (YMMV)

Cab will be ~$50

Skybus is every 10 minutes, not every 5, and $16, not $15 :) But other than that, yes, definitely take the Skybus over a cab - especially if Spencer St is your destination.

Calculator on MEL website says $85 for a round trip to postcode 3000, so on that reckoning, ~$43. No idea how accurate it is though...

I normally find a taxi to cost between $50-60 for that trip. As per others recommendations, I would also recommend the Skybus.

Agree on Skybus. Easy, convenient, and can deliver you to the door of your hotel. From memory my partner and I both purchased tickets on Skybus for $52 for the both of us return.

Agree on the Skybus ... currently $16 o/w and $26 return (I buy 10 trip tickets for $120).

Cab fare from MEL to Spencer St should be not much more than $45! (More for City East destinations.)

Skybus is every 10 minutes during peak times but changes to every 15 minutes during quieter times, 30 minutes off peak and as much as 60 minutes in the wee hours.

My Melbourne Driver charges $65 anytime day or night MEL/City

Mr!

Last 2 trips Airport to Spencer St $59.22 and $50.28 inc Cabcharge CC fee. I have had trips in the $70's depending on traffic. I normally catch the bus though and during peak times the bus has been allowed to use the emergency stopping lane on the left hand side of the road thus bypassing the taxis in the traffic.

+1 for SkyBus also - generally cleaner and faster than catching a taxi. Also there are currently duty free vouchers available on the bus (which you can't use in conjunction with online shopping unfortunately, but it does make restocking booze a little cheaper :))

Skybus Timetables
Yes... I should have prefaced my post by saying in out of peak hours Taxi's from the CBD become competitive due to less frequency of skybus and less congestion meaning cheaper cab fares..

But beware that the Melbourne evening peak can end quite late...

-1 for the skybus. Only really good if wanting to go to the skybus terminal at Spencer St imo.

My may option if not cabbing is to take a hire car

Dave

Given to OP is heading to Spencer st it's quite viabale.

More than that; if the destination is to another CBD location during the day a shuttle bus is available to/from the Spencer St terminus at no additional cost.

Everyone - thanks for the responses. It is obvious that the Skybus wins and given that we will be catching a train from Spencer St to our final destiation it has become a no brainer. If I was still working I would have used my hire car driver, but now that I'm a retiree, gotta watch the pennies!

Again, thanks.

Moderators - you can shut this thread down now if you are so disposed. Thanx

there actually is a public bus u can get a short walk from the terminal, with a zone 2 met card, i think it goes to a train station, so if you REALLY wanna save, that is another option, someone else might have the exact info, or check the metlink website
