A question for Crazy Dave or anyone who might know.

I've just turned silver for this year. I'm already gold and very likely to requalify as gold this year (was nearly double gold last year) so this will only effect me if i fail to reach gold again.

However, i've got no acknowledgement that i've just passed 20,000 status credits or free lounge pass - most of the rest of the perks i already have. It reminds me that last year i didn't get a free lounge pass either when turning silver as i was already a paid lounge member at that time.

What is DJs policy on lounge members turning silver? Assuming the comp lounge pass is transferable it would be a nice thing to have. I've travelled with both my wife and my brother of late and they've been returning on separate flights - would be nice to have a comp pass or two to give them.

if you are already gold, why would this be a problem

Part curiosity, part the fact that one of the bonuses i am supposed to get (the lounge pass) would actually be kinda handy and different to what i already receive.

If you are already gold, do you really go through the being a silver thing (except if you don't fully requalify). Doesn't happen in any other program I know of.

It's my understanding that if you have and additional 3 (or is it 6?) months on your previous year's status if you fail to re-qualify, after which time you'll drop down to whatever you would have qualified for (in your case, Silver).

So I'd say, enjoy the Gold perks a bit longer until they let you know otherwise!

the velocity system is so freaking hard to understand - the website isn't clear, and if you ask particular DJ staff for help, they tell you to go look it up on the website (which is V unhelpful) and don't "disrespect" them by asking so mundane questions...

Mr!

So to take a page out of Qantas’ book that so many members here know more about. If you’re Platinum and in your next membership year (on the way to re qualifying) hit Silver, do you get the lounge passes that Silver entitles you to, or keep on moving along as if nothing has changed?

If the answer is that nothing changes, then why should Velocity be any different?

The system with QF is just as samh004 has said.

Take me as a WP. I need 1200 SC to requalify as WP. I do not get a PS pack when I pass 300 SC, then a SG pack when I pass 600 SC. Basically as soon as I pass 1200 SC, I get a WP pack (which is different to a new WP pack, e.g. no luggage tags). If I fail to get 1200 SC in the required qualification period, I'll be downgraded to SG, and a SG pack (assumed a renewal pack) will be sent to me.

If I were a SG and failed to requalify, I'd assume that a PS pack would be sent to me, and included with the letter would be a solitary QP pass good for one use. And as long as I requalify as a PS and stay as a PS, I'll get a QP pass each year.

My guess is that it is the same with Velocity. I'm not sure if Velocity have a soft landing system like QFF (assumed that this is the case), but my guess is that if you failed to requalify for DJ Gold, you'd receive a DJ Silver pack and in it would be a The Lounge pass. And as long as you keep requalifying as a DJ Silver and stay only as a DJ Silver, you'd receive a The Lounge pass each year.

Two separate questions here.

First, if you are already Gold, you get recognition for requalifying at that level (or "soft landing" as someone else put it - hate to rake up "Congratulations you've turned Gold" email but that's what it was intended for), but you don't get separate recognition for passing through Silver on your way to requalification. If you didn't make it all the way back to Gold you should get the full Silver pack but that doesn't happen until your requal date - not when you pass Silver threshold.

Second question is if you are already a paid up Lounge member and hit Silver what exactly do you get? As noted on the website you get discounted membership to renew your Lounge membership once your existing membership expires. I would think that you should also get the comp pass for hitting Silver for the first time - will check this out.

As to the continued barbs from munitalP "if you ask particular DJ staff for help, they tell you to go look it up on the website (which is V unhelpful) and don't 'disrespect' them by asking so mundane questions...", here is my personal policy for participation on this forum.
  • I will happily answer any question ("mundane" or not) if I believe it will be of interest to a number of members (like this and most other threads), and
  • I will equally happily help individuals with specific issues, especially if it appears something is not working properly on our side.
But if you ask me "can you have a look at my velocity account and tell me if I retain silver" I might reply something like "The Velocity website states in several places that the threshold for Silver is 20,000 status points in a year which you have already calculated you have earned" and suggest that logging into your Velocity account is something that you or your personal assistant are best placed to do. Unlike the Velocity Membership Contact Centre I do not have access to individual account details.

cheers

Thanks Dave. I'm ignoring all of the gratuitous barbs - you do a fine job around here and i appreciate it.

As i would have presumed. Fair enough.

Yeah, i'm curious i don't remember getting it last time.

One thing DJ might think about for future is extra benefits for those who get well past gold. Last year i ended up on 97k status credits or thereabouts - it would have been nice to have got some recognition for the points above gold. A comp lounge membership for someone else, a spouse benefit (which will only get used on the rare occasions we don't travel together), A gift pack of lounge passes or something like that to aim for beyond gold or a little bonus for every 10 or 20k status credits above gold might be a nice formal reward or little bonus.

All on the agenda. We recognise the need for a higher level of recognition than is presently provided by Gold, and expect the number of people who fall into this category will increase over time, particularly with our long haul operations and continued expansion of codeshares and partnerships.

FYI - I have held gold status with DJ for 2 years, however this past year my flying has all but stopped, and of course I did not re-qaulify for Gold. I did not even qualify for Silver!
However, I was surprised to receive a Silver member pack in the mail, along with a free lounge pass.

I know my flying will start again, and because I would be starting from scratch again I considered heading toward Qantas. But this simple gesture from DJ to reward me with a little something that costs them no more than the postage and card if I don't use it, could pay off because DJ will be my first choice again (particularly for the priority check in line).

Well done

That would be a soft drop policy you're experiencing.

QF - and oddly enough quite a few other FFPs - have a similar policy.
