Two different reward bookings - consequences of missing first leg?

Hoping the brain trust that is AFF can assist me here.

I am trying to get from TOKYO > MELB

So far I have found a Hong Kong > Melb leg in biz with CX, this leaves at 6:55PM HK time.

To get from Tokyo > Hong Kong - I have found a seperate HANEDA > MANILA > HK combo on the CX site.
HANEDA 2AM > Manila 5AM > (5 hour layover) > HK 1:15PM

This in theory should leave me around 5 hours before my HK>Melb leg.

I'm worried if something unforeseeable happens, I'll miss my ride home as theredemptions aren't together that there is no recourse. Is my thinking correct? Is there way CX can link my Manila > HK > Melbourne flights together?

Appreciate any advice!

You are correct.

If there flights are on different PNRs you carry all the risk.

The airline is not obliged to reaccommodate you if the first flight(s) are delayed.

Only you can decide if five hours is with the risk.

And welcome to AFF.

Welcome to AFF @TheInfrequentFlyer . As Captain H says, yes, you bear the risk of missing the second flight.

Your apparent spacing between flights gets reduced by

* any delay in the inbound
* taxi time (my arrival at HKG on the weekend was about 22 minutes taxiing)
* time to de-plane and I think you need to clear transit security
* be at the gate 45 mins prior to departure.

So unless the inbound is radically late, 5 hours should be OK. But you'll have to judge if you can afford to miss the outbound flight - cost for new flight and if you have any time commitments on arrival back in Melbourne.

Thank you both, after many long calls to Cathay PH team, they mentioned they can LINK these flights so the airport (CX Manila > HK > Melb) is notified but it cannot be on the same reference.

Am I correct in saying that 'LINKING' won't make a difference and i'll still be left hanging on the outbound from HK if things went pear shaped?

Thank you both for the warm welcome :) Just modest silver member trying to find my way.

Any particular reason you are doing this Manila thing? I assume it's a redemption but honestly, Tokyo to HK is a 4 hour flight, not worth the trouble. Just buy a cash ticket fly direct?

I am trying to get from TOKYO > MELB
When are you travelling and which carrier site are you using, I was on the QF site yesterday and found JL rewards for later this year NRT-MEL without to much trouble. There were also options via TPE back to MEL.
