My 15 year old daughter is travelling to Italy with her school this year. It would be easier if she was able to use her ATM debit card when overseas, but there seems to be restrictions applicable to U18. Does anyone know what the rules are and how I can sort this out?

Which bank?

Commonwealth have no problems issuing Visa debit cards to U18s, NAB officialy have a +18 policy but people in the branch usually wave the rule, St George/Westpac are very strict.

You could try one of the travel cards, Woolworths Everyday Travel, perhaps?

Just give your daughter a supplementary card off your main bank account.

Problem solved.

Whilst I don't know of the specific U18 rule for the comm bank travel money card, there is nothing stopping you from going in and getting the card on behalf of your daughter. Just keep in mind that for most part it is a credit card with all the abilities of such, however certain places may not accept them for deposits for rentals. (I was knocked back at a car hire place in the US, not that your daughter will be hiring a car, but could be a problem if she hires any sort of equipment whilst away).

When you purchase them your given two card straight away from the branch, but instead of a name it will have prepaid written in place of a card holders name, so there is nothing stopping you from giving one of the cards to your daughter as there is nothing to verify ownership of the card.
Also the numbers are not raised, therefore it won't work in an old style non-electronic credit card machine. That said, that isn't normally an issue these days.

IMHO that's a bit of a risk, be it she loses the card, or goes on a shopping splurge...

Or otherwise create another account and give your daughter the other card.

You can always put more money on it as needed and if it is within the same bank the money will be available immediately.

My 17 year old son went to SE Asia over Jan/Feb. He got a Commonwealth Bank debit card (Visa), for which we could lodge money into his account as required - worked out well for keeping him on budget. My other son got a similar card when he was 15.
Good way of dealing with any emergencies, you can lodge funds into the account with online banking.

Work associate's 16yo Daughter went on three week trip to China/north Asia in a group of about 40. He simply gave her his 28° card to use for cash Worked well by all reports.

My 14yo god daughter heading to France with a school group for 3 weeks in Sept - any updated info on which Debit Card might be best for her to use?

Thanks in anticipation.

serfty I thought about just giving her my 28° Card but what happens in the unlikely event for some reason ATM swallows card - would be impossible for her to retrieve.

I spoke to 28° this morn - they will not issue supp to U18yo.

Maybe opening a citibank card in your name and just giving her the card for ATM withdraws fee free, with a backup card from another bank. Just transfer money as required as a safeguard.
