First reaction = Wow! That is dirt cheap for that scenic route, especially if you were planning a combined USA/Europe trip.

But then it clicked in. Y in UA, that's going to be a very very testing time on your bum.

But then, at that price you don't have much choice, UA or one of the Chinese carriers (not CX). So suck it up and treat yourself to a luxury hotel to get over the flight :)

If you can put up with the pain that is UA longhaul Y, that's a healthy lot of status miles for almost any *A program (assuming it books into an earning class, which is very, very likely). Very good miles economy.

Too bad I don't have time before end of March, nor a spare $1419, and God save me I probably can't think of a good *A program to invest in right now.

I don't know if it's worth torturing yourself in United Y for that long. I can't even cope with the idea of east coast Aus to west coast USA on that airline!

Just fly SYD-LAX-SFO-IAD-LHR. Have a nice cup of coffee in the United Lounge at each transfer point.

Also, it's all very well taking travel.com.au at face value (who would?), but have you tried booking it?

It's $1515 on ua.com. And they're hard to beat.

I wonder if I can get full miles crediting it to Lufthansa Miles and More at 1 to 1, would be nice, do it twice and I would have retained Star Gold.

Fare seems to book into K and/or L class from the quickest dummy search on united.com

K and L only credit 50% BIS miles to M&M, however as a SEN you are entitled to a 25% Executive Bonus that counts towards status (though not HON status, of course, unless you fly LH group).
