Scheduled to fly SYD-JFK (Y class) on Oct 1st and return Oct 10th (QF107/108) - I'm travelling with GF (NB QFF) and I am QFF SG. Initially we were allocated seats far apart so on the qantas website allocated seats together (in the 50-60 range) to keep the peace. Looked on seatcounter and it seems that the flights are rather full in Y - does a pre-allocated seat limit (even further) my chances of a (free) upgrade or is all of this decided seperately anyway ??

Yes - all on one booking (booked through Qantas website) - no idea why initially we were seated separate

Since you are on the one booking, your SG has a level of say.

No guarantees, but you both have a slight chance of being op-upped together:

Oct 01: F4 A3 J7 C6 D0 I0 W2 T2 B4 H2 K0 M0 L0 VC SC NC QC OC XC E0
Oct 10: F2 A1 J9 C9 D9 I0 W0 T0 B2 H2 K2 M2 L0 VC SC NC QC OC XC E0

I assume this is all decided upon check-inn and not much I can do beforehand to increase our chances....

Ealier this year with a similarly full flight, I was upgraded on check-in as a WP.

I sat in a row of 3 Skybeds, the other two occupants were QP members who were summoned to the J lounge service desk to have their BPs replaced with ones.

ive made 4 return trips to LAX ( 2 of them on to NYC) and of the 8 individual flights ive been upgraded 6 times! Im only a (ive forgotten the acronym for silver haha) silver club member. I even got upgraded on my AA legs from LAX to JFK twice!! That shocked me big time.
But was also suprised me is that on two my trips i was flying with a friend who had zero qantas status and they upgraded him too!
However on another flight this year PER-MEL i was upgraded but my two travelling companinons were not...ofcourse i took it and left them sitting in cattleclass!
I would say your chances are pretty high - however they usualy wont tell you, you have been upgraded untill your about to board. (in my experience anyway)

** but i should mention of all the flights i was upgraded, i also had reserved exit seats! im not sure if that has something to do with it.
