Folks,

maybe my aging memory is playing tricks on me, but I had thought that in the past if one didn't have enough points for both an outbound and inbound international sector upgrade, the system would still accept the request for both (in case the first one did not come through, the second one was already in place). Now I find this morning that I have to wait until the outbound clears before registering for the return sector. This could be inconvenient for some if you don't have internet access while travelling. Particularly if you will earn enough points on the first sector to cover the second sector anyway. Has this changed or has it always been this way?

Cheers

Presumably you are referring to International flights. (For Domestic flight you do need to have all the points at the time of request.)

ISTR in the past I have quite readily been able to waitlist for international upgrades totaling more points than I had at the time of registering.

Read our AFF credit card guides and start earning more points now.

Yep, international sectors, as stated (actually SYD-LAX return). So at least somebody agrees that this seems to have changed. BTW All I got from Platinum call centre was "according to policy, this is the way it is", despite my queries about this never used to be the case

In any case, time of registering does not seem to have the importance it used to have.

As long as you put your request in more than 24 hours before the flight it should not affect you chances over those of someone who put their request any earlier.
