I was just reading the article in Bloomberg....part with real money does sound a bit drastic doesn't it to be an elite flyer.
Naturally I was relieved that none of my carriers were named.

Well, at 10K annual spending to keep WP status would mean an average of $8.33/SC. I spend more than that...

DL & UA onboard, It must be on the agenda of many( including yr airlines)
The clock is ticking
i'm happy with gold earned at alliance level but agree the top tiers shud be carrier specific loyal , not just
4 flights.Of course appropriate upping in recognition shud follow

I would be thinking "thud goes that game" if we really had to buy fares outright. Heck I only started using the cash/ points slider and Amex Ultimate card this month and it was a novelty.

I think it is a double edged sword for the airlines. They might find they actually make money out of status runs and if status chasers move their spend to another airline, well that is money they are losing not gaining.

There is a real chance of killing the goose that laid the golden egg with some of these limitations.

Some airlines already do this. Qantas does it to an extent with the Platinum One tier.

Yes changes tend to be bad... But there are many very clever people thinking up new ways to earn and retain status...

Spend $10,000 and 100,000 miles OR 120 sectors .... wow, those are pretty tough requirements.
