I like this idea, only pay for the days you need it in Australia, considering Coles have a $24.50 Virgin modem this week that will take Optus SIMs its a good option for domestic travel where you dont need to worry about data costs:

It's a shame that the Optus network is so poor you will be struggling to use it for much ;)
 
Optus network is horrible in Sydney CBD, and Melbourne CBD, IIRC. Ok in the burbs, Brisbane, GC, etc...
 
It all depends on the cell you use and its use as far as voice services go, as most would be aware data is not give the priority voice calls are given, must say I see very little speed difference with NextG all over BNE up to NQ and across to NT which was a surprise.
 
Optus data in bris is bad, gold coast the same. Very inconsistent.
