looking at perhaps buying economy class tickets with qantas to europe and then using points to upgrade.....is this simple or do you need to be lucky to do the upgrade?
also is this not possible if buying a sale priced economy ticket ie: cheapest option...

Is a lottery and you may not find out till few hours before flight if successful.

If you have better Status like Gold or Platinum you have a better chance.

Sale fares from memory are not upgradable other classes from red e-deal up are.

You might consider buying cheap seat to Singapore then better class to/from Europe.

How many points do you have, a JASA for a portion of the trip will take away the lottery, and allow you to take advantage of cheap fares ex Asia or Europe?

What I am doing with Qantas is purchasing the sale fares and then paying extra to get the exit row seats on the international legs which have plenty of legroom and the ability to get up with ease and not have anyone recline into your space.

I also found that although I had purchased the sale fare I was able to upgrade the domestic legs with points, which I have done. The international legs show as not upgradeable.

I also have Qantas Club which takes care of the extra luggage and lounge access.

I never expect to be lucky with the lottery (and so far have not been disappointed because I have never "won" it, added bonus is that I can then use those points for a JASA...)

Dear ozmille - I must wonder at how many mirrors you have broken in your lifetime, how many "chinamen" you have offended (a very old bad luck saying), or black cats whose paths you have crossed - NOT one paid upgrade on points while a Gold or Platinum?

I'm batting pretty well on a 95-97% hit rate with Qantas - as they see this as the same as a revenue fare. I've seen comments from others here that they are having about the same rate of success. Mind you, I have also listened and acted on the advice of people here and booked at the times which increase the likelihood of upgrades (and yes, upgrades for me at J to F, rather than Y to Y+ or J).

Thats the joy of travelling for an employer, flexibility when it comes to timing is often not great (and coming home the inflexibility is often provided by a S(H)WMBO that misses you), throw in like minded souls with the same constraints forced to catch the same planes and upgrades become very rare (thinking Mon/Fridays here).

You mean times of the year that aren't as busy for business travellers (Christmas)?
