Hey
Sorry if this is dumb/in the wrong place...
Was in the q-club on thursday morning before my flight to sydney and was sitting near the service desk- two guy walked in went to the service desk and asked if there were upgrades to business on the sydney flight- the lady was on the computer and then said yes for 10'000 points each and leave it with her and get your bp on the way out. So the long winded question is it normal to just go up and ask and get the upgrade for x points? One was def QF platinum because he has the tags!
Cool thanks as you can see i dont know much!!

No dumb questions, only dumb answers!!

Yes it's called an on departure upgrade and is only available with people with QC membership or gold status and higher.

There needs to be capacity and catering maybe an issue if too late.

They are very rare and popular on the longer routes such as Per to anywhere.

Personally I prefer international upgrades the best use of points.

Also on departure upgrades can only be requested if you have an eligible upgradable fare class.

Eligible upgradable fare-class !! Apart from whole OP-up thingy ... say one was in whY - and requested an upgrade at check in / QP service desk , would one be upgraded for free "somthing like the yup / kup in LOTFAP " ?

On departure upgrade is not an op-up. As far as I know an op-up can't be requested on qantas. On departure upgrades require points to pay for the upgrade.

I thought yup/kup was an automatic upgrade fare.

Yes it is, with certain conditions attached (such as can be bumped back to Y etc)

You will not be bumped back to Y if you make your flight. You hold a confirmed first class seat when you book the ticket. the only time you might have a problem is if you miss your connection. I think there is a lot of misunderstanding about instant upgrade fares on AA.

An op-up and KUP/YUP are totally different.

Don't mean to be rude but just some advice when you go to check-in. Do not ask for a 'free upgrade' at check-in. It is rude and generally you will get on the wrong side of most check-in agents.

You pay for YUPP. KUPP, nothing free there, UG with conditions.

OP UP means operational upgrade, this is decided by Qantas. Not pax.

Never ask for one. If you have an upgradeable ticket and the points, you may request an ODU from the lounge.

I have even seen an ODU from J to F to JNB, traveller I was with had an extremely low QFF number.

... and depending upon your 'booked' fare class, the upgrade may require a different number of points (as mentioned above).

For example, if I travel to Perth in a cheaper fare bucket (S, V), the upgrade to business costs 16,000 points. If I have a full Y fare (or close to it- ie K, Y, H), the upgrade costs 10,000 points.

Really? Was this in the years of upgrade credits?

Or did you mean op-up, not ODU?

It was a few years ago. They felt sorry for the pax. He claimed he had a single digit or double digit number and said QF always looked after him!

I think we have a four digit member as I recall

O? Q? Ordinarily you cannot upgrade from those booking classes. (Unupgradeable classes are OEQN)

FWIW SYD-PER upgrade to Business from SVLM costs 16K, from KBHY costs 10K.

You're right - I must have been dreaming - I can't find such any upgrade from O,E,Q,N fares in my activity statement!

Prior post amended to reflect reality, rather than fuzzy recollection.
