Hi all,

I am assuming that I am unable to upgrade an O class fare to business, but I have plenty of points to spend so thought I'd ask the question :)

Can anyone advise if there is a way to upgrade this fare on QF128, travelling in 3 weeks? The better half has not experienced int J before so I'd love to surprise her for the overnight flight if it's possible...

Is it worth me calling the QF WP line to ask?

Thanks in advance

Not unless you receive an email advising that your flight is eligible to be upgraded.

I don't mean to be rude but the rules are rules. Otherwise why would anyone ever purchase a business class flight?

Thanks for the quick response JohnK. I haven't received any such email and appreciate that rules are rules.

If nothing else I hope my post will hopefully serve as a useful reference for those seeking an answer to this question in future.

I hope I wasn't being critical asdf!

It cannot hurt to call Qantas anyway but over the years I have received a number of emails offering upgrades on lower booking classes. It does not interest me but some people on AFF are interested.

Good luck in your quest....

Thanks, I plan to give them a call over the weekend and will report back when I have an outcome!

Several weeks ago there was a post on here saying someone had been able to put in an upgrade request for an international flight in a booking class that is usually not upgradeable. Others then tried and also had the same success, including me. Prior to that, when I clicked on the upgrade option, I got the generic message saying an upgrade request wasn't possible. However, I didn't receive the email, I just noted the thread here and gave it a go. The upgrade request remains in place.

I had no luck trying to upgrade a international sale fare with points, but was able to use credit card at the QANTAS desk in the lounge at LHR T3. It cost 600 GBP to go from back of the plane to J for the LHR to SIN, worth every cent.

ODU - doesn't sound very QF at all.
Did you get points and SC's for J, or as per booked?

The was a promotion enabling such international upgrades 1 to 3 months ago.

The helpful staff on the QF Platinum line have advised that the fare isn't upgradeable.

I have about 4 hours in SYD before the outbound flight so I will have a chat to the desk there.

Grogan / serfty - are you referring to a targeted email promotion?

I believe it was general ... at the time I didn't use it as I had no flights I could request an upgrade with.

Perhaps try calling them and ask what the price difference would be if they changed your fare bucket from O to S class on the flight that you would like an upgrade? I've done it before (but to change B to Y) - IIRC the price difference was about $150 and I earned double SCs on the flight (as Y is 'full economy', B is 'discount economy')... the only problem being that if you do pay the extra to change to S and aren't upgraded, it's essentially wasted money (points, SCs and travel cabin are all the same as O obviously)... if you'd care to provide your flight date, I'd be happy to review the flight loads for you - though remember that upgrades are processed in the order that they're received after being sorted by status, so if you were to make the change, the earlier the better :)

Only got the economy points, and yeah it was a month ago.

I would've thought since you paid cash for the difference in fare types then you should get the SCs and points for that paid (with cash) for? ie as opposed to paid with points...

No just asked at the desk. Had phoned twice to a couple of days earlier but was told it was not an option.

I though so too, but apparently it was still heavily discounted on full price.
